Harddrive or no harddrive?

Hello!
As a current PS2 and quite possibly future xbox 360 owner I have some questions that I would like to get answered. But first of all, I have no previous experience of Xbox360 (or PS3 for that matter) whatsoever and after having read thru numerous forums online I still can't find a clear answer to my question.
Anyway, my question regards the Xbox360 Arcade console. I know that the Arcade model doesn't have a harddrive as the other models and that people generally recommend the more expensive models as they assume that you will eventually need a harddrive at some point. Because I don't have any experience of harddrives on consoles, what are the other purposes of the harddrive that to save music and demos? People are usually asking if the Arcade model will be able to play newer games like GTA4 as well and I have found that the replies have been quite different. If I only want to save my gameplay on a couple of games, is it necessary for me to consider the more expensive models than the Arcade? Will the harddrive smoothen or speed up the game? How much space does a normal game save require?
Since I am myself very interested in buying the GTA4 (which is also the main reason for buying a new console) I would like to be sure of what I am buying and whether it means that I have to update the Arcade model as soon as I buy it.

well the HD is used for game saves as you said, and you can put music on it, also it is used for downloaded content from the market place such as new maps for halo, COD4 etc, and arcade games such as pac man, uno etc. the arcade 360 will be able to play any of the games that are out, there is no game that 'requires' the HD in order to play it. also, having the HD does not speed up the game or smoothen it any way as it has nothing to do with the game play. as for the space required for a game save, i have a lot of games, 75+ with saves on all of them, some more than others, and maps downloaded for halo and several other games and have about 9.8 gigs left of the 20 gig HD (keep in mind that once the HD is formatted upon set up, you only have like 17 gigs available to use.
however since you have yet to buy a console, i would skip the arcade and get the premium since it has the HD on it already. other than having the HD there is no difference between them, both come with wireless controllers, and hdmi output on them.

Yeah man, it's like you are spending $300 on a console, you might
as well get the HD too, you need it man for saves, etc. I thought about being cheap too like you and go for the arcade, but didn't. Keep in mind too, that I noticed at my Wal Mart in Orlando, all of the new Arcade units were the non-Falcons (203 watts) and all the new Premiums were the Falcons, both manufactured in 1-2008. Whichever one you buy, make sure it's a Falcon, you can tell usually by 175 Watts of power and a manufactured date after 10-07. I have had both and it's incredible the amount of heat difference between the two. My new Falcon can run for hours without getting hot, where as my original 360 got extremely hot after 2 mins.

i have the Arcade (core) myself ... felt the same way - i'll never play online and im only buyin it to hold me over till the PS3 is released - so whats the point in spendin the extra bread - so i jus bought the memory card ...
well a 20 gig HD, 80-90 games, a 1 year subscription to XBox Live, multiple hours invested into said service and still feel there is no need to purchase a PS3 ... i kinda wish i spent that bread on the Premium model ... why?
the core doesnt have that chrome DVD drawer :o(

if you want the chrome dvd drawer, buy it on ebay. cheap as heck, only like 3 bucks for them, and they either snap right off with a couple of spring holders, or use two screws.
