I'm looking into the short wire method of the wiikey installation, as the quicksolder was too hard for me. I hear everyone saying to use 30 AWG kynar wire. Could I just use any wire around the same thickness? or does it have to be kynar?

You should be fine with something close to 30 AWG. I've seen people use IDE ribbon cables for the installation of chips.

Though 30 AWG kynar is the standard wire used in chip installs for most points. Then you should use 22 AWG for ground and power points.

this giude here uses just 30 awg cables for all points. I found an IDE cable from my motherboard and it says 30 AWG which means it is the same as what you would normally get. As I said before, the above guide uses 30 awg, thats it. I wouldn't need to use different wire would I?

and I have another question. i think I have removed point 6 on the wii drive (the bit you solder to). There is no silver there, just the board. Is there a way to get the solder onto the board even tho there is no solder on there now?

You have burnt off a solder point. You will now have to solder to the corresponding IC leg. My suggestion is to leave the mod to a professional now.

On a wii you will be just fine using only 30 AWG, was coming from a PS2 viewpoint.
As for the burnt point, like NDarkness said it's best left to a professional at this point.

Ok I spent about an hour ceperating each cable from the whole IDE cable. And who would have known, it is 30 AWG as quoted from the cable :P

I've cut various lengths and used a wire stripper to prep the wire. Just wondering where you guys put your wiikey for the long wire method. I was thinking above it on the silver.

If you don't mind doing a little extra work, I recommend making it external. Just check out this guide for the details.

wow thats a pretty good mod there :) I don't think I would have the skills to solder that d-sub connection properly. But if I may ask, what is the point of having it external?

Well since the wiikey can't be disabled it would be a quick way of removing the chip. Why would you want to remove the chip, you may ask. In case Nintendo were to come out with a method of banning modded systems. Much like what Micro$oft does with their Xbox 360...

I don't think Nintendo would do that; so many people have their wii chipped. But I do like the idea of it being externally connected. I'll have a look around for the parts.

Well you never know, it would be in their favor. I mean if you get banned from playing online you're now more likely to go buy a new console. Before being banned you wouldn't have thought about a second wii.

Edit:plus their online service is free.
