Game are selling Wii's with Wii Sport for £179 at the moment, so I was planning on getting one of these. I take it it's going to be a Europe version, and was wondering what the best mod chip would be to use with this one. Obviously, it'd be nice to play US/JAP/etc games, as well as homebrew stuff.

I realise this must get asked a lot, but I couldn't find a clear answer on the forums.

Thanks!

Ok, thanks for that. I think i'm going to go for a WiiKey, which brings me to my second question.

Can anybody recommend / dis-recommend (??) either console-chips.co.uk or modchipfitters.com?

They both appear to sell the WiiKey, but one for £6.99 and one for £18.75. What's the difference?

TechWizard/Console-chips.co.uk

Modchipfitters.com

Is there no difference other than the price? Is one of the sites a ripoff? Thanks in advance for any help!

Nah - you are NOT going to get a wiikey - it won't work in your brand new Wii ;)

You will have a D2C chipset so go do a bit more reading.... Infectus 2, Argon, D2Pro, Wasabi, D2CKey, D2CPro are your choices in order of Best to worst but I'd seriously only think about the first 3 right now. Don't ask why cos it's been done to death around here and there are plenty of threads about discussing it - they will be easy enough to find.

There's no way of knowing what version my Wii is till it arrives and I look at it, right?

Can anybody recommend any UK resellers for the Infectus2 (or any of the above chips)? Googling isn't helping much..., plus I'd love to hear some reviews from actual people here that have used them.

Thanks!

Nope you are wrong - at this time ALL new Wiis are D2C

http://www.infectus.biz/news.php

They are relatively new to Wii users and very few actually have them - especially on this forum but some have Argons which is virtually the same thing as far as the Wii is concerned.

Like I said there are numerous posts concerning these chips and using the search button for "Argon" will throw up plenty of results. If you want a full blown review then you'll have to go elsewhere cos there isn't one here, though the official site tells you all you need to know and basically it does what it says on the tin. These guys are the leading modchip developers across all platforms.

Edit - resellers http://www.infectus.biz/resellers.php

Yeah, but how do I know how new my Wii is 'till I get it, as it could have been in a warehouse or store or whatever for godknowshowlong.

Will check out those links, thanks!

Yeah, I never thought of that - amidst a worldwide shortage in the run up to Christmas there's prolly a load of stores that didn't check their warehouse stocks and look behind the Xboxes on their store shelves to see if there wasn't the odd one that they'd misplaced. (Pardon my sarcasm but if you want to know there's only 2 ways to do that... have a lil faith in the info ppl give you or do some serious research - personally I prefer to research cos some ppl can give you the wrong info LOL).

But... Brand new D2B Wii (or earlier even) - NO CHANCE

Also FYI Infectus 2 and Argon work an all Wiis (as does wasabi though there is a lil doubt with that which is why I don't recommend it at this time). If you check the Infectus website it actually tells you this. So unless you desperately want a wiikey your chipset is not an issue.

The infectus 2 and argon look like pretty hardcore solutions, with soldering that might be a bit beyond my skills. are there any simpler (solderless?) alternatives?

There is no completely solderless solution. There is the wii-clip which is available for all the D2C chips and some places offer it with your chosen modchip pre-soldered in.

eg. http://consolextreme.com/Shop/index.php?...&products_id=20

I don't think this includes the jtag programmer which is about another £20 afaik.

I dunno how reliable it is. Might be a winner but it's a new product and only time will tell how well it holds up under prolonged use - i.e. as in staying in place after temperature changes. Some are sceptical about it but I might be tempted to try it.

Does anybody have any experience with the Wiiclip that could say good or bad things about it?

Thanks a lot!

Kinda wish I'd done a bit more research before ordering my Wii, as getting an older version seems to be easier in terms of its chipability, but I guess older versions are hard to get hold of now.

If you google about there's loads of discussion and reviews on the wii-clip.

Also you would have only been able to get a 2nd hand D2B (if you wanted to take that risk). You would NOT have got a new one - and the only difference as far as chips are concerned is you coulda got a cheaper one in the wiikey. That's not really much of an advantage as the better chips for D2C, Infectus2 and Argon are the best choices for ALL chipsets including the D2B as well and if I was getting a chip in ANY Wii now I would definitely choose one of those rather than a wiikey even though they are more expensive. You have no idea how disappointed many wiikey owners have been in that lack of support coming from the makers of wiikey - they disappeared for months until recently and the latest rumour is that they won't be doing anymore updates for the wiikey in the future - something wiikey owners hope isn't true but the fact that their website went offline for so long and left ppl worrying isn't greatly reassuring.

Yeah you shoulda done more research cos you are still only scratching the surface as far as all the info on modchips is concerned. Spend a day or two just reading and reading and then you'll realise all I've told you is absolutely correct.

thanks a lot for your help.

I think I'm going to go either for a D2CKey or a D2CPro, if I can find out what the difference is other than the wirecount.

Also, can somebody confirm that the Wiiclip doesn't need seperate power connections to be soldered? as this is likely what I'm going to go for.

One last question, while I wait for this stuff to arrive, would it do any harm to upgrade the software (as per the dialog box when trying to access the online section?)

many thanks,

velkro
