Major Problems Converting Avi to Dvd With ConvertX

I have been trying for days to convert some avis using (at first) Convert x to dvd - latest version, which is the program I have used for ages and ages with very few problems.
Suddenly it stopped converting any files past the 20 - 30% mark and freezes my PC (AMD Sempron 2gig / 256meg RAM) to the point you can't even do the old ALT/CNTRL/DEL.
Because of these problems I have tried the following:
1. Tried Other Conversion Programs (DVDFlick, Xllsoft, Allok, Easy Video Converter, Nero 8) - among others. All did the same - froze PC at 20-30%.
2. Freed up space on my computer - Still the same.
3. Scanned my computer - Still the same.
4. Used Directshow filter manager to look at my codecs. - Still the same.
If anyone can help me with this problem I would be extremely grateful.

I know the latest version of ConvertX says the minimum is 512MB - I don't know what previous versions want.
If it is related to RAM, then rebooting before converting and shutting down the virus scanner etc might help.
If it was the cpu overheating, you would expect a shutdown?
Might be an idea to check the temp anyway.

Unfortunately, I've checked that side of things (temp is at aroun 25C) and I'm also using an older version where the specs aren't as high.
It is really doing my head in though as I was using the program every day for ages and ages - working fine, then all of a sudden it stopped working.
It's not my burner - I can burn stuff with things like DVDShrink / DVDDecrypter etc. It's just converting files from avi to dvd that is the problem.

In regards to your problem...the one the top of this page with the Log...I'll get to it in a sec, i promise.
Hey guys, i'm James, I'm new here, but i have learned a lot from everyone on this thing, thanks.
So, ConvertXtoDVD...
i haven't been able to Burn for a few days now with ConvertXtoDVD, but i ain't complain' about it's quick process of the Converting and Burning... BUT...
i haven't been able to burn for two weeks now using it, but i think it's ME cause of what the Log said....BUT, that's for another thread...or here hopefully (hint, hint, nudge, nudge)......
Anyway, my advise is to start by cleaning up your system, it sounds like it's sluggish to me.
It could (or could NOT) solve your Conversion problem, but it probably will stop everything from 'stalling' or 'freezing'.
My PC did the same thing a few days ago (same time ConvertX stopped Burning for me).
So i started from sctratch and did a few NEEDED things to it.
1) I did a Disc Defragment, actually i had done it recently.
2) Disc Cleaner - can clean your Hard Drive of unneeded files.
Make sure you have an Anti-Virus running for you, Firewall protection, and...
What I did was get a good Spyware and Adware Removal Program.
I had a lot of little spyware, adware things that it got rid of and...
My computer was so clean and the mouse moved better, the prorams opened quick, it was great.
So, yeah, do that FIRST so you know your running smooth and up to par.

actually, i narrowed my problem down to...
i need to adjust some settings in my 'CMOS Utility Menu', but...
apparently, i can't get into the dang thing.
i press 'delete' several times and it brings me to the BIOS set-up screen, but i need to get to the 'CMOS Utility Menu' cause i want to burn - after two weeks now lol.
does anyone know what the best method is, i mean, i tried all the buttons, delet, f2, f1, tab, ctrl+enter...
it just goes to the BIOS screen.
someone said to 'keep' tapping delet even after you get to the BIOS screen, i tried to no avail.

The cmos settings are reached from the bios screen.
There isn't anything that says that 'these are cmos settings' - just that some of the settings you make are stored in the cmos.
I assume you know what setting you wish to change, therefor it's a matter of searching the various screens until you find it.

yeah, iknow, i visited ALL pages, options, and menus in the BIOS.
if that's all i get, oh well.
but i saw on google someone had a CMOS Utility Menu, here's the link

Neither of my PC's have a specific 'CMOS' tab setting - but I can still access all of the configurable options.
Just what are you trying to change?

thanks Attar.
I'm trying to access it to make the changes listed in the link i provided above.
i thought there were different, more advanced settings listed on the page i sent in the link, that could ultimately clear the way for me to finally get my system to allow my DVD burner Drive to 'Burn'.
i figure, if the guy who drew these steps up (the page from the link above)is also using XP, as am i, i could access this additional screen as he did.
any other thoughts please?

Find out the specific motherboard (on screen during the boot sequence) and Google until you get the manufacturer and the docs for the board.
That link is offering specific examples for one particular board.

I have read the manual online and Googled several search terms specific to my problem...nada!
i was thinking, maybe i should update my Bios?
i don't know if that will do it, but...
i do have one specific question Attar or anyone who may know...
my existing ribbon cable (i put in a 80-pin Ultra DMD cable)is recognized whenever i start the Burn process in ConvertX....
my question is: the fact that i cannot burn, even though my Ultra DMA cable IS indeed recognized, could it still be that it COULD be a bad cable?
my system AND convertX recognizes it, but is there still a chance it is the wrong type or a different make that is not allowing my drive to burn?

Your original post does not show that you were burning.
ConvertX failed during the conversion stage - it was converting an AVI on the [E] drive.
What is your E drive.Is it an external hard drive, because I would expect the HD's in the PC to be C and D (on the same cable)
The optical drives I expect to see on a different cable and would typically be E and F.

correct, ConvertX is NOT burning, this is my original problem, which is why i'm posting.
i have an Ultra DMA cable connecting my burner drive (black end) to the secondary IDE and it's set to Cable Select.
my HDD is a SATA connection to the motherboard.
now my questions are:
are there jumpers on my HDD? if so, i will check in a couple minutes right now, then i'll set them to Cable Select.
Attar, my floppy drive is connected, do i have to disconnect it from the motherboard?
well, i'll get back to you on what i find.

I'm confused.
This sounds like a problem with conversion - nothing to do with burning.
It hasn't got to the burning stage, so the burner is not yet involved.

See - I am confused
Have you checked in Device Manager to see if DMA is turned on for the burner.
Have you tried uninstalling the Secondary IDE Channel and rebooting.
AFAIK SATA drives have no jumper settings.
The floppy does not have to be disconnected.
Try another burning program - like IMGBurn.

actually you have touched on the exact points i needed to know.
i still have not tried deleting the second channel...i wasn't sure if i had to delete the secondary 'channel', or the secondary 'controller' in device manager...so i'll try that.
the device manager (under IDE/ATAPI devices) shows i have 2 controllers, and 2 primary and secondary channels for me?
Attar, do i delete one of the 'Primary' channels?

Okay, lol...this is getting suicidal.
i deleted the 'secondary' channel (the one not in use) and i rebooted, and tried a burn to NO avail, again.
i even got a bubble from my system tray after booting up saying 'found new IDE'.
EVERYTHING is set up properly, my system sees everything along with ALL my Burn software i've tried.
at this point, if anyone has any suggestions, cool, thanks.

The PC has two IDE channels (Primary and Secondary).
The Primary has a blue connector to the motherboard.
The Secondary a black connector.
The burner is connected to the end of the cable on the Secondary channel.
You uninstalled the Secondary and rebooted.
Since you have a SATA hard drive and there is nothing connected to the Primary, try moving the burner on to it.

well i tried another burn AFTER changing my burner to the 'Primary' and AFTER deleting both 'Secondary' channels.
as you can see from the Log (just did this now), everything is recognized and up-to-date...remember i have a SATA Western Digital HDD, so NO jumper adjustment needed, didn't come with them anyway.
don't let the 3.0.0.8 version of ConvertX fool you, cause i tried a burn right before this last one (above) using it's updated 3.0.0.9 version, and it said the same in the Log as the above 3.0.0.8 version burn. (for some reason ConvertX doesn't take the 3.0.0.9 version every time i boot-up...NOT the problem here anyway).
so herte's the Log, if you Attar an anyone can see something or has suggestions, please do so....wow, i know it's just a small tweak, and it'll start working.....dang!
