My husband and I just bought our first PSP. We want to run emulators for the PSX and N64 on it, but we're worried about breaking it. We've read up a little on Pandora's Battery and downgrading the firmware, but we're not sure what to do. We would try it without help, but we don't have an extra $170 to throw down again. Any suggestions?

Well if you can, make a Pandora's battery. Then if you brick(break) it you can just fix it by yourself.

What resources for downgrading do you have available to you? I assume you have the original PSP not the slim right?

You CAN install a CFW on your PSP. Its a bit more involved though. Your going to need a spare battery. Also it has to be a battery for the original PSP not the slim battery. Also a 512mb or larger memorystick will be needed. I will post full instructions w/ pics once you have these materials. Also what firmware is your PSP slim currently at?

That guide should give you everything you need.

The first section will make your magic memory stick, then the next part will tell you how to install the custom firmware with the help of a Pandora battery.

Read it a couple times and then come back with some more specific questions, best way to feel comfortable doing something is being as informed as possible before attempting it.

That thread is great for your needs Incera so read it closely. Also it talks about "hardmodding" a battery via soldering. If you can't/aren't comfortable soldering there is another way to achieve the needed Pandora s battery and all it requires is spare battery, a steady hand, and something to make a fin cut.

We have firmware 3.72 on our PSP.

I think we're going to have to get a new battery this weekend (hubby doesn't want to wreck our first battery).

Thank you everyone, once we have a chance to sit down and try this we'll let you know how it goes. (Hopefully no bricking involved XD)

Version 3.72 is not custom firmware. The pack explained in my last email puts custom firmware onto your PSP. If you do buy a new battery it has to be an original Sony so use your original and use the new battery as a replacement.

@Incera

Just to keep things on track you need a genuine Sony battery for the PSP, it will be fatter than the slims battery, but it is the one you need. This battery will have to be modified to allow a downgrade this process of modifying the battery is generally non-reversible. You will also need at least a 512mb memorystick to create a special memory card to use for downgrading. The card can be returned to its original state.
