Installed wiikey, can't read firmware update disc

My wii has the 3.1U firmware update installed that came with SMG. Installed wiikey and recognized GCOS burned config disc 1.3.
I know I need to turn on region code using the config disc but I am not sure of what steps to take. Do I just press A to auto detect then turn on region code and then reset console with config disc in the wii? Then put in firmware 1.9g disc? I tried that but it won't read the burned 1.9g disc or the 1.9b either. Won't recognize any backuped wii game. I haven't tried a gbackup GC game because I don't have one right now. PLays originals fine. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm assuming the wiikey is correctly installed because it's recognizing the config disc. Is that correct?
Any help would be really appreciated.

your issue is covered there though you might have to read through a bit to get your fix. However, if you still have questions you should post in that thread as it's supported by various ppl regularly who try and clear up any issues.
