Bought replacement DVD drive and still getting the same problem

Late last year my xbox started to struggle to read discs, around the same time Halo came out. It got worse over time and I grew less impatient. I stopped using my xbox for a long time and then games came out that I wanted and I decided to put up with "Please put this disc in and xbox 360 console to play". So I was going to send it to MS but a friend had a similar problem, this was however that his drive died altogether and they want £60 from him to fix it. There was no way in hell I was paying that while it was still under warranty (so was his but apparently it's not covered). So I bought a new MS28 drive off of eBay and fitted it 5 minutes ago and i'm still having the same problem. The drive is brand new, it gets to the error screen much faster and sounds better. Does anyone have any ideas?

im presuming youve put the mobo key in the new drive and flashed the firmware

No unfortunately this is something i've just read that you have to do with replacement drives regardless. Had I known this before I don't know whether i'd have bothered but i'm in a position where I have little choice now. Does it mean anything that the first drive and this new one read backup DVD and yet they treat original DVD's like original 360 games?

Hey
If There Both MS28 DVD-ROM's u can just take the drive board off of the old one and put it on the new one..(So You Wont Need To ReFlash The Drive)then reinstall the new drive back int the system and it should work fine again

How would I go about doing that mate? Dunno what the drive board is lol Am I correct in assuming I need to connect the new drive to the PC anyway to do this?

Right i've been working at this for hours on end and i'm having no luck. I've been trying to read the key from my old drive to write to the new one and mtkflash simply won't work. It won't detect any drive. I've got an nforce 410/430 chipset and i've got the pre-edited nf4 mtkflash. It just will not work. I've tried every SATA port and have had no luck. It comes up on my BIOS, but it does come up under an IDE, but I don't have anything that says SATA on that part of the BIOS, it just shows SATA devices as IDE. I tried finding an option to change this but I couldn't find anything. Please tell me someone has some ideas i'm going mad at this point lol.

u can use the newer version of iprep.. or just unscrew the bottom of both dvdrom drivers and sway out the little green board its like 4 ribbon cables.. .and then screw the bottom back on and install it and it should work

Well I opened one of the drives and nothing that could easily be removed and I only saw 2 ribbon cables. And the problem with the iPrep software is that I need to obtain the key off one of the drives. iPrep will be useful once I get that key.

Was the original drive a Samsung? If so it's pretty easy to swap the boards out. Pop off the board off from the black clip holding it in place. Don't worry you won't break anything. You'll see there are 4 ribbons un-attach.

Just pull the all of except the one connecting the laser. I found it's easier to re-attached that one to the laser than to the motherboard. Do the same with the other board you can and the just swap them out. If you want use a pair of needle nose pliers on the tab of the ribbons to make it a bit easier on yourself.

I got the xbox casing back on, put in Splinter Cell and it made a loud grinding noise, I took out Splinter Cell and it scratched the outside rim of it quite severely I think. I took the casing apart again and tried it again and now it's giving me a Put this disc into an xbox 360 console for Splinter Cell. I put in GoW and it started to make the same noise and I took it out quickly before it seemed to be able to damage it. It plays DVD's and Xbox 1 games fine. I have no idea what the hell is wrong here. Let me stress that this is so loud that a friend who was on the phone with me could hear it and I wasn't holding the phone near the xbox.

Once from booting up the 360, after this I ejected the game and put it back in the try and it started up again fine. I then tried Splinter Cell again, it didn't read it. I tried Gears again and it tried to scratch it. So once again I reseated it and it worked. Then I left it for a while and tried again and it tried to scratch. This has got to be a fault in the drive right? I can't trust that thing, even if it did work a few times it could destroy a disc at any point.
