Hey guys,

I have a wireless connection at home of 10 down/ 1 up

Even upstairs right next to the Wii we have a computer that gets speed test results of approx 5000+/whatever

With the Wii through the internet channel i did a speed test and received about 200kb which is pathetic, it took forever just to download the internet channel which is probably 50-70mb in size.

is it because of the wii's browser or is there something I can do to speed things up?

only thing you can do is to move your router around, or to buy the usb lan adapter and use a wired connection.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

Router is too far from the wii, looks like I might have to try an external antenna mod like here:

what is your routers brand/model/make?

you can forward a port on your router for your wii, speeds will increase quite a bit:)

as there isn't a definite guide i can send you here for help with that
Nintendo Support (1-800-255-3700) Nintendo Online Support (1-800-895-1672)
tell them you want to forward a port on your wii and they'll walk you through it:)

Nintendo might tell you a different port but most people get best results with 80 or port 8080

i remember reading about the external antenna mod. it should work since the antenna is on the outside of the system, and can pick up signals more clearly.

if you're gonna do that mod, i'd suggest adding a heatsink to the wifi (broadcom) chip, and the gpu. that should keeps the temps down with wiiconnect24 on. only thing is finding heatsinks that will fit inside the wii.

I know how to forward ports for the router, its a WRT54GS, but I just wanted to make sure im forwarding ports on my router and not the Wii, I dont understand how it would help on the Wii's side?

i also have a WRT54GS (v5), but it's running dd-wrt firmware, instead of the official linksys. i have yet to speedtest the wii.

because your router is far, the signal is passing through many walls, which decreases the signal.

I'm also running the dd-wrt firmware and have increased the Xmit power to 70 or so, but still, the wii is closer to the router than other computers in the house getting WAY more than 200 down speed tests, i just forwarded the ports and switched the wii over to a different side, testing now..

mine is at 100mW because i added copper heatsinks and a fan for cooling the wifi chip and ram. also, i have the HGA7T 7dBi antennas.

i speedtested the wii with speakeasy.net/speedtest, and was able to pull 10K kbps download and 1K kbps upload. but because i live in a one story house, and the router is only a few rooms away, the signal isn't passing many walls.

Ok guys, something is definitely wrong,

I've moved the wii, literally 5 ft away from my wireless router and it is still getting horrible speeds, I dont want to connect it directly to the router, anyone have any ideas on getting it to work properly WIRELESSLY?

i'm stumped myself. my WRT54GS doesn't have any port forwarding for the wii, and it's still able to pull 10k down.

connecting directly is an absolute last resort. but to be sure, borrow someone's usb lan connector and test the speeds. if it pulls speeds that are high, then something may be up with the wii's wifi.

There is something up with the wii's wifi.

Let me explain.

The nintendo wii and the nintendo ds have the same wireless cards.

This results in a slow speed and major issues when connecting to the internet from the wii console which really sucks.

All though the lan adapter for the wii speeds up the connection you need to remember that usb 2.0 has a max transfer speed of 12 kbps which is a lot better and will connect faster but be farwarned here it doesn't matter how fast your actual connection is i have freinds who are using dsl and can connect faster then me and i am on broadband not dsl which kinda leads you to beleave that the wii was designed for a dsl connection.

I would try the lan adapter i have one and have noticed a major difference in connecting time with the wii.

eh, i thought USB 2.0 is a 480Mb/s throughput. prior USB versions 1.x were 12Mb/s, iirc.

Im making progress but it is very slow,

what I did yesterday was go into the router's DD_WRT setup page and changed a couple things:

Made sure the channel was 11
Changed the basic rate to 1-2Mbps (since the Wii uses a 802.1b wireless card.

This bumped me up to almost 1000kbps down from 200-300 before.

So far I was able to go from 200-300 to about 700 to 900+

My next step is to try disabling WEP encryption and see if that has any effect. Id like to try the lan adapter if i ever find someone who has one. I looked at nintendo's support page and they listed known cable modems and routers with issues concerning the Wii. They did not list any linksys routers and as for cable modems they DID list an RCA cable modem model like mine but the model number was different.

I even logged into my cable modem and there are no settings for a firewall so it should all be clear, I even contact Time Warner Cable and got the same response on the issue that there should be unrestricted access up to the point of the router.

SPI firewall is off. I dont know, lets see how removing encryption for testing purposes goes and I'll keep you guys updated.

my channel is 11. spi firewall and WEP encryption are on. and speakeasy.net/speedtest still pulls 10,000 kbps.

the WRT54GS is a v5, running dd-wrt v24 rc6 micro.

yep. that's what the wii is pulling with it's wifi. from 0-50%, it pulls around 2,500 kbps. after 50%, there's a big burst of speed, breaking the 10K barrier, and it holds it steady until the download test reaches 100%. since it's only a speed test, i'd say the actual speed is probably around 7-8,000 kbps.

watching videos on youtube seems the same as my computer. streaming is quick, depending on the length of the video.
