i have been trying to copy dvd's using dvd shrink and either nero 6 or clone dvd. the problem is that evry time i burn a disc i am getting good images but no sound when i try playing the disc back. i can howevere go into the disc via explorer and play back individual vob files fine. i can put up with this as so far i am just backing up live music events. anyone got any ideas why the discs wont play with sound. its costing a small fortune in blanks. i am using an Iomega DVDRW4216IND-A which is dual format and i have tried various formats of discs. help please anyone

WHICH VOB FILES?
Are you playing the VOBs from the hard drive, or the VOBS from the DVD you burned?

Hi brian65, until you get your process down right, use RW disc as a test. If it plays right then just use disc copy to put it on a R blank. Saved me money when I was learning.

1. These "Live music events" that you are backing up - are they on professional DVDs or another media ?
2. If they are professional DVDs, you have to leave AC3 2ch audio unchecked in DVDShrink in order to get your audio.

the VOB files that i am refering to are on the dvd itsself ie that one which i have burnt.

i went and bought some -rw this morning, having tried unsuccessfully with +rw
to scubapete:
the dvd's i was refering to are professional authored. i also did as you suggested and left the AC3 2ch unchecked.
sorry gents all to no avail. the situation is that the disc will still play on either realone or windows media, but with no sound. yet when i access the files on the burnt dvd individually via explorer they play fine everytime. any further suggestions. you help and ideas will be most appreciated

I suspect you have an IFO problem.
If the VOBs play INDIVIDUALLY from the DVD and sound is there, but when played as a DVD the sound is missing, the fault is in the IFOs (content/structure corrupt).
Use of IFOEdit to create NEW IFOs for the VOBs will solve that.

I am unsure what you mean by that, as Windows Explorer itself cannot play media files - so which program is being launched that DOES play the VOB successfully?

i downloaded IFOEdit and to be honest its just intimidates me. having had a quick look around i haven't a clue as to what it does and how to do it

OK.
Here is a simple step-by-step.
It may seem to have some steps you may consider unnecessary or just plain stoopid, but follow it exactly all the same, the reasons will become clear:
1 - create a directory (dir 1) and copy JUST the main VOBs (e.g. VTS_01_x.VOB etc) into dir 1
2 - if the VOBs are NOT in the form VTS_01_x.VOB rename them appropriately.
3 - run IFOEdit
4 - Create IFOs
5 - browse to dir 1 and select VTS_01_1.VOB, click OK
6 - wait while it processes.
7 - the top pane will show TWO IFO files, highlight the one entitled VTS_01_1.VOB
8 - the bottom pane will show the VTS overview.
9 - under the Title Set (Movie) attributes you will see a video entry AND one or more audio entries (and maybe some subtitle entries)
10 - IF there is ONLY ONE audio entry AND there are NO subtitle entries then goto step 16
11 - create a directory (dir 2)
12 - click VOB Extras, make sure ONLY the following are selected:
Strip Streams
Correct Vob Unit.....
Correct original IFOs
Create new IFO files....
Remove P-UOps
Remove Macrovision
Adjust VOB-Unit pointers
Adjust audio/subp point
VOB Size == 1 GIG
13 - browse the destination to dir 2, click OK
14 - tick the FIRST audio ONLY, the rest are cleared, click Strip it
15 - wait while it processes, then click OK
16 - in the top pane, highlight the BOTTOM entry
17 - click Get VTS sectors, click through until done
18 - close IFOEdit
What you have done is used IFOEdit in one of it's simplest modes.
You have taken just the VOBs and created the SIMPLEST CORRECT DVD structure possible.
You can now take that structure (all the files in dir 1 OR dir 2, whichever is relevant) and drop them into your burning program (your choice of burning program will dictate what you have to do to create a DVD-VIDEO disk).
Note: if you are burning with Nero, it is all too easy to get the burn wrong and end up with a disk that SEEMS ok, but will not work the way you expect (standalone WILL NOT PLAY IT).
IF you STILL have problems playing correctly, the REAL problem lies elsewhere, and further investigation will be needed.

Hi Brian, I just read one of your posts that said that these dvds you are trying to copy are already re-authored once. I assume then that there is no encryption on them.
Maybe we are looking at this wrong. Have you tried a straight disc copy program? Even copied dvd movies can be done this way once the encryption is removed. I don't see a post that you tried it this way. Also I assume the original plays ok too.

hi everyone, been away for course couldn't concentrate because of this problem.
anyway, i am willing to start from scracth with any software recommeded. any suggestions.
also i was using free downloads of anydvd and dvd clone (which expired when i was away) will the full versions make any difference to this problem

Hi Brian, The trial versions of CloneDVD & Anydvd are full versions. Nothing will change with the purchased ones. Free alternative is DVDshrink or DVDdecrypter but you need a burning program to go with them(Nero 6 is a good choice).

hi everyone, well i have been round the houses, burned the midnight oil and a few discs, and i have come to the conclusion that maybe it is my drive, so i am thinking about a new one, any suggestions, pioneer, sony ?

A drive that will burn at high speed

Shop around for the best deal. I picked up a "Buslink" drive many moons ago. My BIOS identifies it as an NEC 1300a. There are definately more distributors than manufacturer's.

Just a thought, If your are considering trashing the drive, try flashing the FIRM WARE. If it is a bad flash, what have you lost? If it heals the drive, then you have gained. Have not flashed anything myself but there is a wealth of knowledge available from more senior members.

thanks for your thoughts gents, speed is not that much of an issue here, a burner which will burn dvd's with sound and a reasonable price are my prime considerations

hi gents well i went and bought a Pioneer 106D, installed and operated no problem. burnt the first disc using a Princo DVD-RW and on playback the silence was deafening. I used DVD Shrink 3.1 and burn't the disc using X-oom Movie Clone. (i'm waiting on Nero6 to arrive)
Th crux of the matter is the problem still remains. I had a look in my device manager to find out what kind of sound card (controller) i have as it is in built to the motherboard. the device manager says it is a Intel(r)82801 BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller. delving in a bit it says that the device is working properly, which i concur with as it makes the correct sounds when used in all other modes (games, alerts, music playback (mp3, wma etc)) once again i call on your wealth on knowledge to try and resolve this issue.

further to my last post my system specification is Pentium IV 1.8GHz, 576 MB Ram, HDD (18.6GB x 2 and 111GB x 1), NVidia GeForce4 MX 440, Pioneer 106D DVD-r and Mitsumi CR4804 TE CDR, OS - XP Professional.
The sound will play back if i go into the burnt disc via Windows explorer, selecting one VOB at a time
