Hey guys,

Thought I'd post these connection tweaks about the Wii, it has helped me improve my speed but I am still having a lot of problems, I hope we can help each other out in this post.

Ive asked around and got some advice and here is what I've gathered, God willing:

1) I have not been able to confirm if this helps but a couple sources mentioned that forwarding ports 80 and ports 8080 on your router can help free up the ports the Wii WiFi uses (maybe the internet channel specifically?) For more information on PORT FORWARDING go to www.portforward.com or search Wikipedia for "Port Forwarding"

2) Using a Wireless Router? Try these steps.

a) Turn off the router's firewall.
b) In the Wii settings, set up a static ip address, to do this you will need to know some of your router information like the gateway address and the subnet mask, many times the default for this is 192.168.1.1 and 255.255.255.0 respectively, and then a static ip would be the beginning of the gateway address but a different last number such as "192.168.1.108". Different routers use different addresses, search for your router online and check or simply go into your routers setup page. Also you can go to Start -> run -> type in cmd and press enter. This brings up the command prompt now type in "ipconfig /all" without the quotes and this gives all address information. The gateway address such as 192.168.1.1 is what you type into a browser to access your routers settings. Default usernames and passwords vary but usually usernam is blank with password admin by default, again check your documentation. Heres a list of default passwords and usernames:

Default Password List

b) If you dont want to use DMZ, just forward ports 1-65535 for the static ip you setup for your Wii.

c) Change your wireless router's channel, Nintendo, and Books on Networking, recommend that you choose channel 1 or 11 because most people default to channel 6 which interferes with other channel 6's (like your neighbors) sometimes.

3) By now hopefully its fixed (but then again mine's not completely fixed) but there are other things to try, like today with Nintendo WiFi support it was mentioned that I should see if I can get into my CABLE MODEM itself, and I did not know this. It turned out my cable modem's address by default was 192.168.1.100 but unfortunately for my RCA modem, there were no settings to configure. But some do, try checking and remove your firewall there if you wish.

Any other tips? Please add!

Thank God for knowledge! =)

Thanks everyone else who helped, the random people who gave info I found through google, and Chris from Nintendo WiFi support.

Update

Ok guys a couple more things I tried that seemed to bump me up from the 300-700kbps range to almost 1000kbps (still no where near what it should be but better)

Went into my router's page (using DD_WRT firmware)

Changed Basic Rate to 1-2Mbps. The wii uses 802.1b wireless card so this is supposedly more compatible.

Changed again back to channel 11 and together these seemed to bump me up .

The funny thing is, I moved the wii only a few feet away from the wireless router to make sure the signal strength was not an issue and I have the same results.

Next I'll try temporarily removing encryption and see if that has any effect.

why are you trying to increase speed? are you having slow down problems? what are you doing on your computer at the time? how fast is your internet? is it cable or dsl?

I have a 8 meg cable connection connected to a surfboard modem running firmware 3.1 connected to a 54g airlink mimo router that is hooked into a netgear gigabit switch with 4 computers connected through cat5e with gigabit cards, and as long as I am not running any torrents I have not had a problem, and that is with everyone online surfing the net at the same time

Sorry, I had details in another post but for this post I was sticking more towards tips but here are some details:

The 1meg down I get is on a completely unused network when I tested it, when my advertised speed is 10megs down/ 1 meg up (which I get on the other computers, or on wireless computers I get at least 5-6 megs down, big difference from the wii)

I dont have a usb ethernet adapter so I cant test that, im gonna keep trying to make this work.
