ok heres the thing i bought the VIA 6421 chipset installed it.. I get my 360 into mode b using the sata chipset.. but then i restart my pc to flash the 360 drive and it doesnt show up.. Before i found out the x360usb doesnt work with 0078fk i bought it.. I hooked that up and my pc recognized the drive.. but you cannot flash the 0078fk with this... can someone help with this???

Ok, here's what's up. You run the slax disc, that'll put your drive into modeb. As soon as it finishes and you hear your PC shut down, immediately hit the power button again. When it boots up again, do not restart it. Your drive should be recognizable.

ok heres the thing... I have already tried all the different ways of getting the pc to recognize the drive.. and it will not work.. Thats why i am saying I don't get it,, because when I run slax it finds the 360's ip addres and all that stuff, but then i restart my comp or shut it off and turn it back on, and still no hitachi drive showing up.. I just installed the sata chipset, so im wondering if there is something special I have to do in order for it to recognize it.. Because I just bought a kreon flashed drive that plugs into the sata card..

ok I just bought a new 6421 chipset from newegg.com . I just got done flashing my drive a couple hours ago.. The problem was that the vt6421 chipset I originally installed was a raid chipset.. so I bought the nonraid and it recognized it the first try.. But thanks for the help from everybody that offered it... I appreciate it.. Now I have to buy a SATA power connector so I can put in my Kreon flashed drive and start making backups..

Hi there. I'm hoping someone might be able to answer my question.
I used toolbox to update my 0079FK Xbox Elite. It told me the flash was successful.
I can load retail games with no problems. When I load backups of those games I get an invalid disk error.
I can get past this error by following THIS quick guide.
I'm wondering whether I'm always going to have to use that reboot method to load my backups or whether somehow I missed a step in the firmware flash process.
If anyone can help I really appreciate it!!

Hmm, interesting. Were you just upgrading from ixtreme 1.2 to 1.4? I'm not entirely sure if you'll always have to do this, I've never encountered this problem before. It would just be something in the firmware though. If that's the case, then I'm sure it'll be fixed in the next release.

My flash was from original firmware directly to 1.4 iXtreme.
What's weird is the fact that the solution that was mentioned in the thread I referenced was in a thread that was posted in June of 2006. Long before version 1.4 of iXtreme and way before 0079 drives even showed up on the shelves.
There've been at least 2 revisions to iXtreme since the Jun 2006 post I referenced so I don't understand why I would still be encountering this issue.
I'm wondering whether or not I actually flashed my chip because the post I referenced doesn't mention anything about whether that's a fix for flash modded 360s or just any hitachi (flashed or not)
Is there any way of verifying whether or not my hitachi is flashed with iXtreme 1.4? Is there something in the toolbox that returns what firmware is on the drive that's connected to the PC?
Any thoughts, comments or help would be greatly appreciated!!

Sure you can tell. Just hook it up to the PC again and open it in FW toolbox. That should tell you.

You can't flash Hitachi 79 drives like normal drives, well you can but...
You need to install a pass me key first. Such as the maximus 79 pass key.
Once you've done that you can flash the drive like normal.
Apologies if you already know or have done this :)

i was wondering if anyone could help me out.... i have one of the original xbox 360's with the hitachi drive, and i cant get the slax 2 disk to work for putting it into mode B.... if anyone could help me out id appreciate it thanks.

Hi,
Make sure the drive is attached to your pc with a sata cable and suitable sata card.
Make sure the 360 video cable is plugged into the 360.
Go into your pc bios and disable everything except your pc cd drive as you'll need it to read the slax disc.
Boot up your pc with the slax disc, making sure you have your bios set to boot from cd. Leave the 360 turned off at this stage.
As soon as the pc starts booting up the slax disc turn on the 360.
Depending on what version slax you are using it will prob get half way and say 'spinning up disc' at this point press eject on the 360 drive.
When its all done, reset the pc and go back into bios to re-enable your hard drives etc, then boot into windows.
If it dosnt work, try again. Some times its a simple as getting the timing right and turning on the 360 at the right point (as soon as you see slax booting up)

Yeah, I definitely installed the 79 Passkey and the drive went to mode b and was recognized in windows.
I was also able to dump the original.bin
That's what is making me wonder why I'm running into this problem because it seems as if everything is fine from the firmware perspective, it's only the booting issue that I'm curious about.
I've ordered another Hitachi from Llamma.com and I'm going to write lock code of my current drive to the new drive and just deal with an older firmware. It's simply too inconvenient to always boot my discs in a "special" boot sequence.
I want to throw the disc in and just play.
Regardless, I'm still going to check the firmware that's on my 0079FK Hitachi just to verify whether or not it was properly flashed.

So you've been able to boot your games, but only after multiple tries? Because with ixtreme you need the stealthed games of course or else it won't boot.

Sorry it took so long to reply to this topic. I've been tinkering with the problem this whole time. I've finally come upon a solution.
First of all I verified that I had flashed the drive properly by the easiest method possible. The Power On with Open Drive method mentioned in Textbook's tutorial allowed my drive to enter ModeB and appear in Windows XP for me.
That ruled out my question as to whether or not I had the modded firmware or not.
Eventually, I happened upon THIS post and decided to give it a try. Well, my drive's pot originally read at 5,218 Ohms, which was far beyond the 3.4 -4.2 Ohms mentioned in the tutorial, so I figured that had to be a possible source of the problem. I brought the resistance down to 3.610 Ohms and gave it a shot.
ALL OF MY BACKUPS NOW WORK!!!
I would imagine that a bunch of the people who are having difficulty with disk read errors would solve their problem with this method.
