I'd say it was quite easy. I couldn't get my Hitachi into modeb with the slax CD though so I had to use the sewing pin method which I guess has a higher probability to brick one's drive. Once in modeb though its a piece of cake.

1.
I never flashed an xbox before, and when I first did it, it took me in total 10 minutes, the hardest part imo was opening the xbox :P

I'd Craigslist a local modder (don't send it off, the shipping will kill you) abd poay $30-50 for it, definitely the easiest way.

well, as for a guide, not sure, but there are several 'text book' tuts out there. but assuming you get the right pci card, it only takes like 5 steps to flash the drive. the card you will need has to have a via 6421 chipset in it. and i posted a really easy step by step flashing process using iprep in a thread a few days ago that you can follow once you to the flashing part.

not sure, had something to do with iprep in it though. just when you do go off of my guide, dont use the dben commands...use dsam i believe, or whatever are the command lines for the samsung drives. when you boot up with the iprep drive, it will tell you what they are in case im not correct.

found it

step 1: put USB stick into USB slot
2: open up iPrep
3: load firmware definition (1.4.1)
4: select drive letter from drop down box
5: hit make bootable
6: shut down computer
7: deassemble 360 and hook the dvd drive up to the PCI card
8: turn computer on, boot off the USB stick
9: follow command prompts (it will put the orig.bin on the USB stick after you run the dben 1234567 12345 command.)
10: shut down 360 and computer and restart into windows
11: open up Firmware toolbox and make sure the FW it dumped is a legit one. if so move on, if not do as i said before to copy and paste a legit key in it.
12: restart computer and boot off the USB drive.
13: follow command promts and run the fben 1234567 12345 command to erase/flash the drive with the 'hacked' firmware.
14: shut down 360 and computer
15: put a burnt game in it to make sure it plays.
16: if it plays, put 360 back together
17: if it doesnt play games, see if it will play original games then restart computer off the USB drive, hook 360 back up and run the rben 1234567 12345 command to restore it to original shape. and start over.

what kind of damage could a bad flash do and is it usually fixable?

easily fixable, for a benq you would run rben to restore it, for a samsung it should be something similiar.
