I just bought a 360 from eBay and in the listing it said that it had "the new heatsinks on the processors" (emphasis on the plurals) which led me to believe I was buying a Falcon 360. When I received it to my horror it had 3 inductor coils and a copper pipe going through the CPU heatsink.

Naturally I contacted the guy and he claims that although the 360 doesn't have a Falcon motherboard it is still the new model cos it has HDMI and the heatsink he was refering to in the listing was the additional GPU heatsink (which I can't seem to see by the way).

Now my question is this: are there 360s out there with non-Falcon motherboards but do have the additional GPU heatsink? Cos as far as I know only Falcons have the extra heatsink.

I don't need people telling me I'm a fool for getting ripped off cos that ain't gonna happen. Noone rips me off and gets away with it. But if you can shed some light on my question, I'd be very grateful. If you can't then move along. =)

Also, a bit off topic... do all Falcon 360s have the quieter BenQ DVD drive? Cos the DVD drive in my 360 is the Hitachi and it's as loud as a turbine engine.

I don't know how M$ could release such a piece of $h!t of a console. This is my 3rd 360 and they've all been crap. I mean the games are great if the 360 doesn't give you the stupid "You need to play this disc in an Xbox 360!" I mean, what the heck does this thing think of itself to be? A DVD player? "Hey M$! You sold me a confused console with an identity crisis!" Sorry, just friggin frustrated with the whole 360 brand. My PS2, PS3 and PSP haven't even showed a single hint of problems or failure. WTF M$?!? [M$ bashing over] End rant.

You're the perfect example of why you shouldn't buy a 360 online, you need to buy it at the store so you can make sure you're getting a Falcon. You got suckered, man, it happens. I'd try to sell it on e-bay and buy a Falcon at Wal Mart.

there are non falcons out there with extra heatsinks. MS started to do this when the RROD first started. so it is possible to have a non falcon and have an extra heatsink.

and the falcons can have either the benq or the hitachi drives.

The falcon console will have the upgraded gpu heatsink which also comes with refurbed consoles from MS. Falcon will also have upgraded cpu heatsink. Some zephyrs have the upgraded cpu heatsink also (I had one anyways). Also the falcon has a different power plug connector.

There were a few lots of consoles that came with the old cpu heatsink, hdmi port and new gpu heatsink (lots 0737-0739ish). They were made around September-ish I think. They are the exact same hardware as the Australian 360 Elites and were made around the same time.

ps. consider yourself lucky that you got a hitachi and not a benq, I'm on my third benq drive :( while my other 360 with a hitachi is still going strong.

Well, today is your lucky day, then. Because he didn't rip you off. He advertised it with the extra heat sinks and that's what you got.

Now... did you ask him if it was a Falcon before you bid? Because if you assume something with out asking questions or doing some research, then you have no one to blame if you don't get what you expected. And seeing how you're here after the fact, I'd bet it's safe to assume you didn't ask questions or do your research.

The latest, pre Falcon boards do come with the revised heatsink. And seeing how it has the HDMI, then it's not just a refurb which came back with the new heatsink.

You got a newer console. And the new ones do run better than the old 360s. If you want a Falcon, then look for the 175 watt powersupply.

Oh yea, the Falcons have both the Hitachi and Benq drives.

Yeah but they're obscenely loud. Mine is running at like 50dB-60dB if not louder! Is that normal?

Well, not exactly! He advertised it as having the new heatsinkS on the processorS. What else am I to think?

I did do some research, how'd you think I found out about the Falcon? M$ surely didn't announce it. There's just so much of a grey area when it comes to 360 hardware that it's really hard to define what is what.

Man! Why are there so many different hardware configurations? I think it's about time for the Xbox 720 that isn't so lucky dip every time you buy one! You should get what you expect to get: a quality console that allows you to just enjoy the games and not hafto worry about this shit!

I'm gonna take this 360 and the power brick and shove it up Bill Gate's ass! Who's with me? He better take it with a smile too cos I feel like I just got shunted!

F#ck it! Once I've played and finished Ninja Gaiden 2 I'm never coming back to the Xbox brand. I'm gonna stick to my trusty PS3.

**Melodramatically @ the Xbox** That's it! It's over between us! You can take your massive power brick, your fancy exclusive games and your way overpriced network adaptor and go pose as a next-gen console somewhere else! I've had it!

**On knees before PS3** I'm sorry I left you! I only played 2 games on the 360 I swear! Maybe 3, but... but... but... none of them even compare to what you have proven to me you can do. And no, the graphics weren't prettier than yours! Plus it didn't even have inbuilt WiFi and forced me to pay whenever I wanted to play online! I'll never do it to you again! I promise!

HAHAHA... I'm losing the frickin plot! Grrr... AAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

What I don't get is... with M$ being one of the largest companies in the world you'd think they'd have a substantial R&D budget that would pick up on and address all these issues before the product is due for release!

They should be worried about how a shoddy product such as the 360 might affect their reputation. Well, then again there is no reputation to protect is there? But if that was you wouldn't you wanna turn that around? I think the problem is no matter how crappy M$ products are they're gonna sell cos the whole world is dependent them. Bill Gates must think we're all fools, he could slap his patented holographic sticker on anything and sell it at 4 times the price of his competitors and people would still buy it. I just don't get it. Am I the only person to feel this way? Is noone else disappointed with what they unboxed when they got an Xbox 360?

But there is definitely a pattern with M$ products isn't there? Windows 95, buggy mess. Windows 98, buggy mess. All those money-spinners in between like NT, ME, 2000 were all crap. And then Windows XP, buggy mess. And now Vista, yep you got it! It's a pile of crap too! So why did I expect any different from the 360? I don't know, I suppose there's just a part of me that expects better. When I pay upwards of $500 for something I expect to get a quality product that will fulfill my needs for years to come whatever they might be.

Please share your M$ horror stories if you got any. Right now I feel like the only sane one cos everyone else seems to just accept these subpar standards and are just happy to fork out countless dollars to fix M$ products that shouldn't have broken in the first place.

Oh, so that's it. The USED 360 you didn't inquire about before purchasing it works fine and you'll use it to play a game.

Had you went to buy a new 360, you could have found a Falcon. Yet, because of your own ignorance, you ended up without one and you're going to come here and complain about it and expect us to give you a shoulder to lean on.

You put yourself in this situation. You have no one to blame for your actions. So sorry, but grow up.

You bought a used console with obviously works, yet you felt the need to come here and talk crap. You should have read the rules. No fanboy flame starters.

Thread reported.

You bought a used 360 off of eBay and expect us to believe you paid close to $500 for it?

Once again, this isn't the place for that. If you want 360 help, we'll be glad to assist if we can. That's what this forum is for. Ask... and we'll answer. But if your only purpose is to stir up the nest, then you're barking up the wrong tree.

@bhetrick

I didn't mention that I'm in Australia. A brand new premium is $579 here and a core is $399. And with our dollar not far behind yours you can appreciate how much of a raw deal we get and how lucky you are to be in the States, from a consumerism point of view that is. Can't say the same for your gun laws or your health system. =P

I have no intent in "stirring" up anything. It just seems that everybody is ok with having their consoles fail one way or another, whether that be hardware failure or failure to live up to certain standards.

I suppose my perspective could be different cos I'm a late adoptor. My first experience with an Xbox 360 wasn't until 6 weeks ago whereas I've had my PS3 since it's Australian launch back in March 07, and the PS2 before that so they sort of set a benchmark against which I have compared the 360. In those short 6 weeks I've already been thru 3 consoles trying to get one that oozes quality. But I guess it's a lost cause trying to find a quiet, reliable 360 cos from the sounds of things just cos it's Falcon don't mean it's workmanship is any better.

On the other hand now that I'm not so worked up I can understand why people still use it anyway. It's our beloved gaming machine! So what if it's loud under the pump? Who cares if it's high maintenance! It gives me gaming bliss and I'll do what I need for it to continue to. Still sux though. Cos wouldn't you rather have gaming bliss and not hafto worry about that stuff. Anyway, I'm over it... moving on...

Lastly, I disagree that this forum is solely for asking questions and getting help, I believe it is about genreal Xbox 360 discussion. I'm sharing my experiences and expressing my opinions and would like to know if anyone else shares them. That's it! Stirring the nest??? Tsk.

@bhetrick

Oh, I didn't see your hostile comments. What's up with that? Did I offend you? I apologize if I did. Like I said just sharing my experiences and opinions, if you disagree that's fine, but reporting me to the moderators? Come on. Who needs to grow up? Clearly not me.

What hostile comment? I said

But when you make comments like

how else do you expect people to take you?

And I'm sorry you disagree, but this is not the place to make comments like that. Many threads have been closed before because it just turns into a flame war.

Now, putting all that behind us, the new revision, pre-Falcons do run cooler than the first versions. It is a shame about MS dragging their feet with addressing the overheating issue... but it has been fixed.

Sure, you will still get a small percentage of hardware failures, all consoles do. But it's nothing like what was experienced with the launch consoles.

So if this 360 you just got is working fine, why are you upset now? Besides the fact of the purchase.

Remember, the Falcon will have a 175 watt power supply if you are still looking for one.

@bhetrick

I'm not gonna go into why I felt like you started attacking me personally, cos if you're happy to get past that then so am I.

The reason I was upset was not because the console didn't work but because it turned out to be something it wasn't made out to be. I just felt misled for reasons previously explained. Also, I did ask the seller first who reassured me that yep it's got the new heatsinkS. I didn't specifically say Falcon because it's a pain in the butt having to explain what Falcon is every single time I have an enquiry cos most people don't know. So when he confirmed that it did indeed have the new heatsinks that was good enough for me. Additionally, I didn't know at the time that non-Falcons had a revised GPU heatsink so any mention of new heatsinks to me meant Falcon.

I've decided that I'm just gonna stick with what I got and upgrade down the track. It's just been too much of an ordeal. It's not the be all and end all, as long as I can play games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Gears 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2 then that's redeeming enough for now.

Perhaps you're right to some degree about the flaming but it wasn't intentional I was just pissed off at the time. Plus the "melodramatic fight and make up" was meant as a joke, that's why I said melodramatic.

Please don't ban me oh kind and compassionate moderator! =)

@Moderators

Another reason not to suspend me, aside from you guys being the compassionate people that you are and understanding I wasn't in my right mind, is it's not everyday you get a thread as interesting as this one has turned out to be! =)

Safety valve? Ahh... I get it, very clever, so clever that it wasn't immediately obvious. My apologies.

I actually started the thread with a legitimate question but as things progressed got more and more worked up. Won't happen again.

If you already haven't looked in to it, there's some aftermarket cooling options available for the 360 if you're worried about the overheating.

Sorry if this is off-topic a little, but I'd rather not start a new thread just for it. But I just got a console back from microsoft, which I think might be a falcon, not sure though. It came with a benq drive, and was manfufactured in march 2008. and when I opened it up to flash it, it had a different heatsink I noticed, when I googled falcon chipset to check, it looked exactly the same as the heatsink I had. It doesn't have an HDMI port though, and from what I read, they never sent out a falcon from repairs, but did I just get one? Or does some of the xboxes just have the newer heatsink, even non-falcons?

so i take it you didnt bother to read this thread before you posted as it was stated several times, that MS ships the RROD consoles back with an extra heat sink on them.

I did read the thread, I have one old console that was repaired by microsoft that has the extra heatsink, but the heatsinks look a lot different than the one I received today, which I'm not sure if falcons have a specific heatsink or if they use the same kind of heatsink on the regulars they send out

When you opened it up did you notice 2 or 3 green inductor coils on the motherboard at the opposite end of the HDD? If it's 2 then it's Falcon if 3 then not. I think that would be your best way to determine, correct me if I'm wrong.

You're not going to get a Falcon without HDMI.

Just an update on the situation. Instead of returning the console for a full refund the seller and I negotiated a partial refund of $70. So I got a non-Falcon Premium manufactured on 22-Sept-2007 with HDMI and 4 games for $430 which is just about how much the bundle is worth in my eyes. So despite things not turning out ideally I'm still very happy with my purchase. Just thought I'd let you all know in case any of you gave a damn. =)
