Linking together MPEG files using VirtualDub

Hiya
I encoded, authored and burned my first DVD the other day from 2 .AVI files that I linked together using VirtualDub (thanks to the guides and forums on this site!) I would now like to do the same thing with two MPEG files that I have. I've tried linking the MPEG files using VirtualDub, but I'm not sure how to do this. Is the procedure for linking MPEG files similar to that of linking .AVI files? In VirtualDub I go:
"File"
"Open Video File"
I select and open the MPEG file and the message "Parsing interleaved MPEG file" appears and the video is shown in the main window.
Now, when I try this with a .AVI file, I have the option to "Append the AVI segment" and link another .AVI file. This is now greyed out when I open an MPEG file (probably cos it's not a .AVI file!)
So my question is - do I have to convert the MPEGs to .AVI files to link the two files together or is there a quicker way?

I just converted the MPEGs to .AVI files using VirtualDub and they are huge!! 30 gigabytes each!
Am I doing something wrong??

Nope, that is to be expected (approx 1 GIG per minute of playback).
It saves it in a relatively uncompressed form, hence the HUGE size - this is normal.
You may also want to use VirtualDub to save to a WAV as well, it will be a smaller file than you expect, it will NOT have header info, you will have trouble if you treat it as a real WAV file though TMPGEnc will handle it quite happily (I suspect it is not really a WAV file, merely a sort of frameserver type of thingy which TMPGEnc understands).

well as the main web site for virtual dub staes, one has that ability to open mpeg files with virtual dub, but cannot save as an mpeg file. prolly because of his GNP license or something (he wants to stay out of trouble) um, if u use virtual dub for converting mpeg file then you will indeed have a lot of space on your hd used. i recommened that if you do that then change the settings of the divx 4 format if you can to the highest wuality and save in that format for best results. files sizes with be pretty big though, you m ay end up doing it parts at a time and usoing a diffrent software to emcode it to mpeg and later joining it with a diffrent proggy.

If he wants to author a DVD, WHY would he want to save them as DivX???Quote:

TMPGEnc will quite happily take the AVI and the WAV and encode to a DVD-Compliant MPEG2 - no sense whatsoever in saving as DivX.

before you go any further, the MPEG files you have, are they DVD-Compliant already?
Use a program called GSpot to check.
If they are, you can use them straight away, without re-encoding.
If they are not, then you are heading partially in the right direction.
We need to know more (GSpot info please, for each file) about the 2 MPEGs you want to use - not all MPEGs are the same....

I don't have the same exact problem as Mikey (I only have one file and thus don't need to link), but I am trying to burn my downloaded mpeg files to a dvd. GSpot says it's an mpeg format video (mpg/mpeg/vob.) that is not supported by GSpot. Both the video and audio sources are detailed as mpeg1payloads. Any idea on what I should do with it?

Hiya medialife,
load your file into GSpot and click on the render button.
Tell us what it reports.
You may need to load some codecs into your system before you can proceed.

Thanks for the help!
I loaded the MPEG into GSpot and it has come up with the following info:
Video Src Type: MPEG1 Payload
Audio Src: MPEG1AudioPayload
Video path: (S) --> MPEG-I Stream Splitter --> MPEG Video Decoder --> (R)
Audio path: (S) --> MPEG-I Stream Splitter --> MPEG Audio Decoder --> (R)
Is this of any use?

Hiya mikey2004,
I don't recognise the codec identifiers that GSpot has provided.
It is possible they came as part of some software (camera/editing software perhaps) you have on your system.
What codecs have you got installed?

Hi Mikey
As another newbie can you tell me which guides you used for the AVI files, ive also got two I want to join together using virtual dub, but I cant seem to find a full guide to using virtual dub. which software are you using and which guides did you use for encoding,authoring and burning cheers Lindsey
