Are you using a mod chip in either of them...

Because that seemed to mess up guitar hero friend codes for me...The only way I got around it was for the other person to add me first

It is not the internet connection. I had my brother's wii and my friend's wii use my internet as I used my wii at the same time. My brother and I both have wiikeys. We wanted to see if we could play Brawl online using the same connection from different rooms. My friend used the real game. My brother used a backup. I used the backup japanese version of brawl. We exchanged friend codes and it worked.

I would try it again. Don't enter the code at the same time. Have one wii enter the code, then do it with the other one. Give it time.

And Flying_V were you playing guitar hero out of region. Because your friend codes change if you use a out of region version.

No same region...but the GH wii online was always a bit dodgy anyway

I doubt it. Playing using a wiikey doesn't affect online play. It has to be something else. Did you try re-entering the friend codes.
