Ok, so M2TS won't cut the bill, so I'm going to go to DivX. I have on general DivX question:

If I jack the video bitrate to 4000 (the max) is that overkill? I want as close to original DVD quality as possible, and size is not an issue (usually come out around 4 gigs)

And in regards to the PS3's support:

Is there a list of the DivX features that are implemented in the current (2.30) firmware? Specifically, chaptering, but also in general?

my ps3 plays high quality divx with no problem at all. it actually upconverts GREAT. i know its your preference but i dont see a reason to jack the bit rate up THAT high, why not just make the dvd?

would you like the quickie, or the full minute and a half?

Because burned DVD's have a shelf life, it adds a step in the process that I don't want to have to do, and because I want a media server cause I'm a geek. :)

I'm asking about the bitrate because I'm admittedly new to this whole thing. Until I learned about the DVD shelf life thing I was just going to burn the DVDs. And I've already had a few go on me.

What I'm really looking for is a rule of thumb for the bitrate. Quality is my concern, not file size or compression. I'm watching these on a 52" 1080p TV after all.

The other question was whether or not the PS3 is really a DivX Ultra player, which would mean I could do chaptering in the DivX file which would be nice.

I've read a couple of articles on the matter, and there is even a forum post or two on here...

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/303864 for instance

that claim that burned media has a shelf life of 5 years. Now I don't think it's really that short, but I HAVE had DVD's mysteriously stop working.

Maybe I'm just buying into the paranoia. But then I have a 5 TB raid array here that says I ain't losing anymore discs.
