I'm a newb and this may be a dumb questions, but is it possible to watch regular DVD movies on the Wii with a modchip? What about divx, xvid, avi, etc?
Regular DVDs, yes. But it requires a swap disk to load the DVD software every time you want to watch a movie and from what I hear the wii laser isnt really designed for that kind of thing so its not good for the drive.
As for divx and other video filetypes I dont think theres currently any way to play them on the wii.

Orb streams audio and video from your PC but also free internet TV and Radio. They aren't the same channels as the ones on the apps you mention - i.e. if you been watching live footy using them you won't get that but I'm sure it's possible. Just need some geek to get on the case. Not holding my breath tho ;)
Orb and Pimpstreamer are definitely worth a look. Orb is easier to get set up. You access both from the internet browser in Wii.

No - if you don't want it then don't have it m8... I think it's worth the token amount to have youtube, bbc iplayer, orb etc as well as be able to surf layed down on the couch. It's an optional extra if you want it that's all.
Ive been struggling to swap my Wii stars for wii points. I barely gotten 200 :( (and still have 2200 stars to swap).
Most of the time they're not available, but Im definitely getting it once they're available. I guess internet channel is a must, it's a pity it's not free :(
