SONY'S game unit is delaying for the second time the launch of an online virtual universe for the PlayStation 3 because the service needs further development.
Home had originally been scheduled for launch in late 2007 but was delayed until early 2008.
Now Sony Computer Entertainment plans to open up an early version of the virtual universe in the second half of 2008.
"We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service to ensure a more focused gaming entertainment experience than what it is today," Sony's game unit chief Kazuo Hirai said today.
The delay is another setback to Sony, which has much riding on the PS3 but faces fierce competition from Microsoft's XBox 360 and Nintendo's Wii.
Sony has said previously that the free service would allow PS3 users to set up an apartment for life-like virtual characters, or avatars, who can invite friends over, share pictures and videos, and play online games.
Users can personalise their virtual home with furniture, art and other items and chat through audio or video links.
The service is seen as a cross between social community website MySpace and Linden Lab's Second Life, which allows "residents" to build homes, create vehicles, nightclubs and stores, and to communicate with instant messaging.
The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that Sony was preparing to launch a separate online video service for the PS3 as soon as the US summer, quoting unnamed studio executives familiar with the plan.

Thats what I thought as well. They had talked about releasing the ingame xmb as well in late 08' so perhapses the ingame xmb is connected into home and therefore if one dosen't work neither will the other?

im not happy about this.. sony should have announced home around this time instead of all this crap were hearing them every month

Besides that it's always from some random third party, they should keep up updated through THEIR site, not whoever they decide to spill the news to.

**** it. First, they said October 07. Then Spring 08. Now the BETA is coming in FALL. I don't even care about Home anymore, I'll just by The Sims 2.

yep corparate asses who only care about money, ps3 not being hacked and psp fw 4.00 being UNhackable meaning d.a cannot unlock it and put the famous 3 letters on the end. clue the first letter is m and the last is three

I was mad when they had the first delay cause I thought it was gonna be something sweet that would hold me over till grand theft auto 4 came out. Now I dont even give a crap because I'll probably never be on home now cause I'll be too busy playing GTA 4 and then Metal Gear Solid 4. So I'm gonna be laughing at sony cause they spent all this time on home and I bet alot of people will do the same as me.
