Japanese Wii with D2C & firmware updates

I've already got firmware 3.2J that was updated with SSBB on my Japanese Wii...

Now that I have SMG (NTSC-USA), it wants to update my firmware even though I already have 3.2J. I've read on other threads already that yes, mismatching regions firmware updates can brick you wii... but I was also told the seller it's ok to allow the update as long as your firmware version is higher.

So, given I have 3.2J, and SMG is 3.1E, is it always safe allow the firmware update? I assume nothing the Wii will stay at 3.2J after the update.. is that correct? Of course I can be wrong and brick the Wii.. :(

Don't update it. You ONLY update with a game in a same region as your wii is. You'll brick your wii very likely if you update it.

so then... if I have 3.2J already, it is safe to run a 3.1J update... but I'm tempted to try the 3.1E update to play SMG in English (trying Wii Brick Blocker rendered the game unplayable..)

Anyone can confirm if it's ok to run an older update even though it's out of region?

I don't think updating with an older update is safe from out-of-region games. You could use brickblocker then see if the game plays.
