Hi all,
Been trying all day to flash my Samsung MS28 drive and getting nowhere fast.
I've got my key information to put into the firmware, done that, created a bootable USB stick to store it all on. Gone into dos mode, run the flash program, picked the option for my sata, turned off the 360, tried turning it back on again in 10 seconds (or less time or even more up to 20 seconds) and nothing. It just sits there doing absolutely nothing.
I've tried everything I can think of and find to try on multiple sites and nothing works.
Can someone please give me a step by step on how to sort it please. I'm running an Asrock Dual Sata 939 motherboard with an ALI sata/raid controller (M5289) that is set to non-raid and sata in the bios. I've read that it's possible to do these drives using this controller.
Any help would be appreciated along with a link to any programs needed and a step by step guide (for a newbie on the 360) to do the flash. I have extensive PC knowledge so can easily find information if more is required.

Download
iprep(Latest)
and ixtreme 1.4 firmware
Select ur Samsung ixtreme firmware
Select SATA Info
Select Destination(Your floppy or thumb drive)
Check Format/Make Bootable
Then Click Prepare Destination
restart computer to boot floppy/thumb drive
power on abox 360
type dSam 1234567 123456 your serial
they when the device selection shows up
power off the 360 then select the Xtreme one
then power on the 360, it should begin to dump the drive
just sit and watch.. it will dump the drive make the ixtreme firmware with your DVD Key and flash the drive
when all is complete shutdown the computer and then the 360, hook it up and test the xbox 360

Thank you for the reply.
I already have the key from my former drive (Hitachi drive was the one that was in the Xbox). How do I put the key into the Samsung Iextreme firmware?
Have you tested this procedure with a pro ALI Sata controller?
I don't understand how reading the windows XP sata information can work in Dos as they're different environments. Would have though that modifying the MTKFlash file with windows settings would cause issues when it's run in Dos.

The 10 second trick to flash MS28 drives only works with a VIA chipset.
And you use Firmware Toolbox to insert the hitachi key into the Samsung FW. Then you have to spoof the FW to report back as a Hitachi.

I've put the key into the new Samsung firmware it's putting it onto the drive that's causing the problem.
I don't have a via sata card I have an ALI sata card that my research tells me is capable of being used but I can't seem to get it to work to write the firmware. I don't see the point of purchasing another Sata card just to flash the drive on one Xbox 360 assuming I could even find one of the cards to begin with that is.
Isn't there some way of doing it in windows like you can normal drives? Seems totally stupid to me that everything has to be shut down into Dos mode just to write some firmware onto a drive.

rename the custom firmware u put the key in at SAM-CFW.Bin
take the bootable Usp Stick open it in my computer and go to the Backup/1234567/12345 and paste it in the same folder as the Sam-OFW.Bin
then restart computer boot the USB and type Fsam 1234567 12345
and it should flash

Tried all that and it doesn't work. It just reads the drive but doesn't start flashing it, trying the 10 second trick doesn't work either. I'm beginning to think that my Sata card isn't compatible like my research says it is.
Do you by chance have a list of compatible Sata cards (onboard and offboard) that will work with the drive and programs available instead? I have access to a few other machines who's onboard ones may work and I have a plug in sata card (can't think of the make off-hand) that may work.
This is now the only way I can think of doing the drive as all the suggestions so far are ones that I've found via research and I've already tried with no success.

a VIA VT6421 will work.. u can get one from ebay for about $8 shipped

Again, the 10-sec trick ONLY works with VIA chipsets, whether it's onboard or pci sata.

I don't want to buy a Sata card just to flash one Xbox 360 it seems pointless to me, that's why I asked if there was any other makes of onboard cards that work.
If the Via boards are the only ones that use the 10 second trick then how do the other ones work to flash the firmware? Do you not have to turn the 360 off to get them to flash when you choose the drive?

You don't have to turn off the xbox to flash MS25's.

I didn't mention an MS25 I was asking about the MS28. But thanks to everyone who tried to help I've now managed to get it working using another computer with a different Sata chipset than the one in my own system. It was an Nforce Sata controller that finally managed to do the job after an hours messing around with it.
The 360's all back together now and working fine although for some reason I can't stand it upright to play any backed up games it has to lay flat which I found odd but a small price to pay :)
Oh should also mention in passing that I used Ridisk 2x DVD+R DL disks to backup the games I got and they work perfectly fine when burning with IMGBurn on it's default settings.

Yeah totally forgot about the NFORCE chipset that can Do the MS28.
I was merely stating that you do NOT have to turn off the MS25, since you thought you had to do the 10-sec trick for ALL drives.
And I know that you were talking about a MS28. Hell I even wrote a damn tutorial for flashing the MS28 so I kinda know what the hell I'm talking about ;)
Anyway, glad you got it working now. Next time you ask for advice though man, you could be a lil more appreciative of the responses you get.
Edit - Oh yeah, you might as well start buying Verbatim DVD+R DL discs before you have problems. The discs you're using might work now but they WILL wear out your laser sooner than Verbs...
And don't use the default settings in IMGBURN. If you come across a game without a .dvd file, you'll be here wondering why it didn't work.. So go into the settings and manually set the layerbreak to 1913760 and save yourself future troble.
And with verbs, you might can stand your console up again.

Sorry I didn't mean to sound like I didn't appreciate the advice everyone was giving me :( I've just never run across anything so infuriating to get working correctly. I'm used to Windows based systems and the ease you have of flashing firmware on those not having to close down to Dos and mess around to get something to work. Guess it's more straight-forward to do things under a GUI environment than through Dos anymore :)
Didn't think it mattered what disks were used to backup games, I've never used Verbatim disks in all the years I've been writing things (mainly because previous writers had issues with them i.e: Sony DVDRW writers). Got a Pioneer now and never tried them on those. Wouldn't have thought it'd burn the drive heads out though using other types of disks. It'd be interesting to hear from people who've suffered from this problem to see how common it is.
Does the layer break of all games happen at 1913760? Would have thought it'd depend on the size of the game being backed up as to where the layer break comes into the disk. Everything I've done so far has been around 7GB in size and they've mostly had that layer break but surely if the games around 8GB in size the layer break would change?
I only back up games released by genuine groups on the scene and so far all of them have included the .dvd files and show the layer break area in IMGburn. But thanks for the advice on this one :)
Has anyone found out yet how to play games from other regions if they've got a TV that can handle Pal/NTSC signals so we can play games from other regions? Seen Mayor League Baseball 2k7 on the net but it's NTSC only and it's one of my favourite games (much better than MLB 2K8).
