Hi everyone, i had a problem with my wii. It is ntsc u version chipped with wiikey. Now my wii can not read any dvd games because everytime i inserted a disc to its' drive, suddenlly the power went off. I have tried to figure out what the problem was. I suspected the wii ac adapter at the first place but without any discs inside my wii, it was fine and there was no sudden power off. Playing vc games was okay and other channels had no problems either. By the time i clicked the disc channel, it asked me to insert a game disc. I did and that was when it happened, my wii was only about to read the game(a rotating disc animation),suddenly the power went off.
Anyone else had this kind of experience? Anybody got an idea what happened to my wii and a solution for this issue? Is this an hardware or software issue?
Also does this mean my wii is bricked?
I didn't know whether this would help or not, I could successfully run Brawl(NTSC) and mario kart(PAL with the help of datel freeloader) without any problems before this incident. The last time my wii was fine, was when i played the house of the dead return 2&3(ntsc). Now my wii has a 3.2u firmware.
Thanks everybody for any inputs. Your help will be very appreciated
without actually looking at the console itself and negating the AC theory, i would venture to say it's either a solder/wire issue with the wiikey, or your wiikey is getting overheated. heat tends to make a system's faults shine. it will go after the weaker components like solder points or loose connections...it doesn't help the wiikey is vulnerable to heat on its own.
probably not software related. see if cooling it down and then keeping it in a nice open area helps (or put a fan on it while you run it). that will at least let you narrow down the culprits.
thanks for the reply jnaks, i will try your tips even though i had tried to give a test each day(hoping a miracle) since the incident(without a fan though). I saw that you were pretty certain that wiikey was the culprit. So if still no luck with your tips, what would you recommend me to do? disassembling the wii and fixing the wire/solder? But i never had any experience in doing this kind of stuff as i bought this wii with preinstalled wiikey.
hmm, unfortunately, you are in a bit of a pickle -- as if it turns out it is indeed a problem with the AC plus or connection, you might well have to solder anyway. Unless happily it was just the AC power adapter (crosses fingers).
if you want to check the AC adapter itself (only what's attached to the power cord) you could swap one out with a friend to test. Also listen for a high pitched whirring sound which is usually a tell-tale sign in power adapters that a capacitor has gone or is going bad.
is your power regulated by some sort of UPS? Or is it at least protected by a surge protector? Small jolts or deficiencies of power can lead to equipment failure. it could have been a power spike that caused the issue.
after that you're forced to check inside the wii for any sort of damage to the wiikey or the wii board itself.
now that you mentioned it. i remembered when i plugged the ac adapter to the wall outlet, there was like a spark. Was this what you meant? I would definitely try using another ac adapter, but it would take time as none of my friends had wii. Did you think it was worth a shot to order the official ac adapter straightaway from Nintendo? I am in Australia so do you think the one from nintendo australia will work on my wii?
