i hope this is not a dumbass question but i got a flashed 360 and has not updated with the codec to play divx/avi movies (december update i think) i know alot of people were banned with this update so been putting it off, but i now have it linked to pc and want to play movies,was wondering i have 360 dvd drive that is not flashed, if i put it in my 360 thats flashed and then try to update it would it work? i know about the dvd key assignment but im not going to use the drive just as a dummy to get the codec on my HDD cos it will still connect to xboxlive and my pc even though it wont play discs?????????? many thanks

It reads like you answered your own question.
You know it can't work without injecting the flashed dvd roms key and you don't want to do that to your unflashed drive.

So if you're asking if there's another way you might want to check out this link that steimy gave in a different post about updating with a cd or dvd.
