I get the drive into mode b without passkey using slax 2.1, i boot up my computer, windows recognized the drive, but when i go into firmware toolbox 4.0 and try a raw dump or a classic dump, an error message comes up saying "cannot read from drive." I've used both computers, firmware toolbox ver. 4.0 and 4.6 and have tried both of my computers. I'm starting to think my drive is unflashable, but if you guys have any ideas your more than welcome to try to help out.
well im not trying to buy the mod chip then find out i have the same problem. When I use the flashix.bat application and enter the drive and submit the folder name and everything, it says my drive key has been ripped, but i don't know how to read it because its a bin file. Is there anyway to get the key so i can buy a new drive and replace the hitachi?
tcs, he's trying to say the only way you can flash you 360 is by getting a modchip. you cant just flash it like any other hitachi or any other dvd drive in that case.
Its the sole dvd drive that sucks if you have it.
EDIT: okay, yes you can buy a new drive and replace it with you hitachi 79 however i believe you have to follow certain steps in flashing the new drive before trying to flash it. Just fin forums that talk about replacing dvd drive.
You can use a programmer to read the key and original firmware besides a modchip,but it does require you to desolder the TSOP chip off the drive motherboard.You need a Willem EPROM programmer with a 14mm TSOP32 adapter to read the TSOP chip after it is removed.The Maximus 79Passkey works,but I have read users having problems with the Infectus 79 chips.Its kind of luck getting the Infectus 79 chips to work,because some report it working and some don't.I think the best bet is to use the Maximus 79Passkey modchip as it has a better success rate.The 79FL drives are the hardest to mod,and it would probably be better to swap it out by spoofing an earlier version like a Hitachi 78 drive instead.You will need some way to get the key and firmware off though whether it is modchip or using a programmer.If you got the black epoxy on the TSOP chip as well,use some Jasco Epoxy remover to get it off instead of the heat gun as it seems to work better in my opinion.Its some potent stuff though so be cautious when you mess with it,and don't glob alot of it on just the areas you need the epoxy removed.If you have to use it try to use it in a ventilated room or outside if possible also.Then just use a pyropen to desolder the legs of the TSOP chip if you plan on using the programmer or solder the header kit on with a pyropen.You have two options either a modchip or using a programmer,but the best way to do it is get the key and original firm off and spoof an earlier drive.
i know how to swap a drive considering i've done it before. But I need the drives key. When I tried to read the firmware of the drive, it dumped a was.bin file and a key.bin file. I've tried to get the key by opening the bin file in notepad, but obviously it didn't work. So I'm wondering if somebody knows a program where I can use it to somehow get the drive key from the key.bin file, and replace the drive with an earlier drive.
Well let me know how you got the key and everything off there without using a modchip or a programmer,because I'm under the impression that you can't get the key or original firmware off without a modchip or programmer on 79 drives.The dumps you have could be messed up,and you need 360 firmware toolbox to read the key and firmware etc...Its not a software issue with these drives,but a hardware issue.How did you swap drives if you don't know how to read the key and firmware also,did somebody do this for you or something?
