GTA vs. Saints Row

1st, GTA is a great game and better than most games currently out, but almost every reviewer gave it perfect score.
It is good, but seriously, I've put in at least about 10 hours and so far it's not as good as saint's row, be it story, objectives in story missions, driving mechanics, non story activities, openess of the game early on, shooting system (although the gears of war cover system is cool), character models (but the city does look better in gta).
Like I said, great game, not really complaining on it, just confused on how it gets a 10 and Saints Row gets an 8.

Saints Row 2 is due out this fall, so we'll see how the new one rates.
Personally, I feel that although they both share the same "idea", they're still two different games. I bought GTA4 and I'll most likely buy SR2.

SR and GTA 4 like bhetrick said are to different games. Most people who score games just score them for the names. Halo 3 was complete crap and it got a amazing score because of its name. GTA 4 is the same way. Its a huge amazing game that took alot of time to make and turned out to be a great game. Now a 10/10 is a little much if you ask me but then again I dont own a mag company either. Its a game of Name and $. Personaly I liked SR alot more than GTA 4 story mode wise. The ideas they came up with were original and fun. GTA 4 hasnt brought much new themes to the table. Love them both just not a 10/10

Considering Saints Row is nothing more than a poorly developed GTA rip off I think GTA is still the better game. Saints Row had a weak story line, while GTA isn't Oscar worthy at least it's made me laugh and provided a few 'twists'. The voice acting blows SR out of the way. The actual shooting mechanics work infinitely better than SR. The only thing SR actually has a leg up on is the driving mechanics. Considering GTA isn't a racer this really isn't a concern.
With that said, how in the world did so many magazines succumb to the hype of this game? The game is a breath of fresh air in a stagnant series, but it's no where near a 10...no game is. 10 infers there's nothing you wouldn't change, and no game is that good.

Poorly developed GTA really? Is that why GTA 4 took so many ideas from SR? I hate people who think any free roam game is a GTA knock off. Just becuase it was the first good free roam doesnt make SR a rip off. Hell if thats the case Halo 3 is just a pretty looking rip of the original DOOM

I played about 3-4 hours of Saint's Row and I was not that impressed. There was nothing original about it (from the "make your own character" to the "rival gangs collide") and everything felt awkward and clunky to me. The thing that bothered me most though was the driving system. Cars would stop on a dime and make turns in a way that made driving effortless, boring and provided no appeal. Also, the shooting system was terribly difficult for me and I prefer the GTA IV shooting system, even if it is a little bit assisted.

And funeral, how can you tell someone to keep their opinion to themself, and turn around and post yours. Everyone has a right to post their opinion.

It's just a matter of personal taste. These xxx vs xxx threads are pretty pointless and always end up with a shouting match..
I haven't played GTA4 yet.. I'm waiting for my 360 owning friend to pirate it ;). I'm looking forwards to having a good blast because I have played most of the rest of the series, from 1 on the ps1 to san andreas on the xbox. All great fun, and good to unwind with.
I don't rate saints row, or halo3 for that matter. This should be better, it would be hard to be worse than SR.. c'mon really. It was more like driver3 than a GTA series quality game.
The 360 has some pretty good games. Overlord is interestingly different, a couple of the shooters are good to look at if a lot too linear. Overall I have found the hyped games to be a let down and the lesser known titles to be somewhat hidden gems. (will there be another in the Otogi series ever in this gen?)
It will be nice to have a free roaming game again. RS have managed to keep the quality and interest where it should be, in the game play and not just "oh wow.. I can see every blade of grass" kind of crap across the rest of the series..
I'm waiting for my few hours at this one. It might just inspire me to buy a used 360 when funds allow. Nothing I have played on the 360 so far has inspired me to go out and get one.. Can't say more than that.

There is no comparing these games:
GTA the originator and still the inovator. many have tried to get their peice of the GTA pie by making similar titles but every one has been a worthless pile of crap.
Saints Row- a very cheap knock off that falls way short of being a GTA game. They tried, they failed. Better luck with Saints Row 2. I sure won't be wasting my money on it.
I played Saints Row for about 2 hours before i decided to go back to my old Xbox 1 and play some San Andreas. They are going to need quite a bit of fine tuning if they want to compete with a franchise like GTA.

Actually Halo is a Half-Life rip off. Which once again Halo will never be as good to me as Half-Life was. Half-Life when it was release was a groundbreaking PC game that did things that no one else was doing, not to mention it spawned the very popular FPS spin off Counter Strike. Most articles that you could find about the original Half-Life on PC will tell you that it was revolutionary for PC FPS games.
To quote Gamespot "Half-Life is the closest thing to a revolutionary step the genre has ever taken." and that is from 1998. three years prior to the release of Halo.
Same goes for GTA. Saints Row came out in 8-29-06
The first GTA i played, GTA III, was released 10-22-01
So they had free roaming and that whole game style covered before it was even popular. So they too were innovative and groundbreaking. And it is not only the free roaming that they tried to copy. the whole premise of the game is a big GTA wanna be.
I don't say these things just to be mean to Saints Row fans, or Halo for that matter. But anyone who has played them all can see the easy comparison.

I'm kinda disappointed that so many people say saint's row is just a cheap GTA, it's far from it. Not going to argue about it being better because it is different enough game, but my main complaint is with the people who haven't really played it and say it sucked.
If you actually played saints row at least enough to kill off one of the gangs, then I completely respect your opinion if you say the game sux, for everyone else, get off of GTA's nuts. Saints Row was the next gen evolution of "GTA knockoffs" and did it extremely well, maybe you just need an HDTV to appreciate it.
As stated before though, my main complaint is that GTA4 is extremely overated, and with it's move to next gen, didn't do alot of things as well as Saints Row did.

Did you play GTA4 yet? then you would understand why is was so hyped..first GTA on next gen console..i'v ebeen playing it for a little and honestly its awesome game and was not over hyped at all..alot of tghins make it better then the last GTA...san anderas which was awesome when that came out..and for saints row it is a cheap GTA rip off...stop saying its not it's an ok game to play but just admit it..its a rip of copy of GTA..and yes i have played saints row..but traded it in a while ago at my gamestop down the street:)

I have a couple of theories on why you say SR is better than GTA:
-You have weird taste. you like games that are obviously subpar to competitor, among other things. SR is good game but it's absolutly doesn't stand up against GTA4.
-Also with the budget of GTA4 SR could have been made 5 times over.

Saints Row had a better story than GTA IV? Did we play the same games?
I really liked Saint Row a lot, but GTA IV is way more epic and the amount of stuff they crammed into is staggering. Saints Row story was pretty retarded. For starters Julius had be at least 50 years old and was still gang banging with teenagers like that? Gimme a break. GTA IV is certainly the better game IMO. Also a lot of times when Saints Row tried to be funny or cool it was pretty lame (Freckle Bitch's?). GTA IV is actually really funny at times pretty cool just about all the time.

The idea for Saints Row is a blatant spin-off they knew this when they made it, trust me. It will only push the envelope, and make the other team try harder. But if you love GTA than just accept it, now you have two openended gangland games to choose from. If the SR team wasnt making SR they would be working on some other game that would expand some other genre. Just be happy they took interest in GTA and not another WW2 game. Seriously this is an awesome time to be alive. Quit acting like a bunch of spoiled <EDIT>

GTA has better graphics, and a longer story mode.
Saint's Row has a better story, than GTA's of the past.
IMO GTA is better, but I own SR and will get SR2 when it comes out.
People who use the "GTA is better because it was the first free roam game" argument are silly. By that logic Atari pwns any system ever created and Double Dribble is the world's greatest basketball game.

Oh so an argument based in reality is stupid? GTA was the inspiration for SR, you deny that and you might as well deny evolution. SR had lame characters, a horrible story, even worse gun play and some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard. It tried to copy GTA but failed miserably. I'm sure a GTA clone will eventually come out that surpasses the originator, but so far nothing has come close.
