Do I need to use a VGA cable when playing H264 mp4s on my Xbox 360? I can play them using standard component cables but am I getting 1080p?

Also a similar question, am I getting 1080p when playing games via standard component cable?

component cables are 480P
VGA will not give you any better of a picture.
You want high def you need to go with HDMI.

I have one Xbox using a VGA and another using the component cables and the picture on both is just fine. When my xbox (component cables) was using HDMI you could only tell a very slight difference between that and the current component cable set up.

I had to switch the cables when i got a Turtle Beach headset in order to get sound in them, kind of sucked but the difference between the sound in those headphone, and the picture quality made the headphones win hands down.

I'm a bit confused. I can get High Def gaming through component cables, correct? So component cables can handle high definition (hence the HD switch on the adaptor).

I know you need HDMI cables for upscaling DVDs (this was forced onto manufacturers by the DVD regulators, whoever they may be). But do the same restrictions apply to MP4s and Divx?

For gaming the component cables can do 720, 1080i or 1080P but for DVD playback it is only 480P
since i do not play movies on mine i can not say what resolution you would get streaming MP4 or DivX.
I have an upscaling DVD player i use for those. My 360 is for gaming only.

if you want true high deff, you should be using hdmi, to hdmi in on tv, or even an hdmi receiver, to and hdmi tv. everything should be hdmi, and even the quality of the cable matters if you want to be specific, the cable on my 32inch in my bedroom is like two feet long and cost me 50$. you aslo want as short of wires as possible, the longer the cord, the more likely you are loosing pixels. and thirdly, make sure all of your equipment is set to 1080p. if your tv and box are, but your receiver isnt, you arnt going to get 1080. (exe. adjust the setteing on the equipment)

So the xbox component cables do not provide proper HD? If its not proper HD then its not HD at all if you ask me.

the xbox out dons't have to be, however the cable going into your tv or receiver needs to have an hdmi end.

I don't suppose you have a link? I can't find any mention of this cable online or in the shops.

With some further research and talking to some self acclaimed experts I have been told that the VGA cable will give me Hi Def, but only progressive (which is what I want). Also, the component cables will give me 1080i for movies and 1080p for games. The 1080i for movies explains the ghost effect I am getting (the reason I started suspecting I was not getting Hi Def). The VGA cable will also upscale DVDs to 1080p resolution.

So basically the component cables are only just falling short. All I'm missing is 1080p for movies and upscaling of DVDs.

Anyone care to comment?

they are both analog signals, you will really never be able to tell the difference. And even if you can it will be extremely small.

I have one 360 hooked up with a VGA cable, the other with component cables (until they fix my TV's HDMI port) both on the same TV. You you can really see no difference in games and movies.
