Do I need a UMD disc to load iso's?

Sorry of this sounds stupid but do I need to have a UMD disc inserted in order to load iso's?

I am currently running Dark_Alex's custom firmware 3.90 M33-3 and whenever I try to load Crisis Core, it gives me a "the game could not be started error".

no need for a umd. your driver is probably not set to sony np9660.

in the xmb menu, press select. this will bring up the vsh menu. go to umd iso mode, and change it to sony np9660. exit the vsh menu, and try crisis core again.

i've run the japanese cc:ffvii and cc:ffvii UNDUB iso's with no problems on my 3.90 m33-3 slim.
