Well if you got that far then your good.
Open the firmware in fw toolbox and transfer your key over to the hacked firmware and your good to go.

I dumped it and it froze just after reading, firmtool 1.2 didn't put up any information on whether it was successful or a failure or nothing, but the dumped firmware does open in firmtoolbox 4.6 at least..
BENQ-CFW.BIN (0 bytes)
BENQ-OFW.BIN (256 bytes)
says it's benq, gives the serial and the revision of the benq drive, then says ixtreme x5 (must be cos it's preflashed with it) and gives a long key...
I'm going to re-prepare my pen drive with iprep and dump it a second time just to make sure the key's ok..

ok, I've dumped it a second time and the key is exactly the same, so it's dumped successfully regardless of firmware tool confirming it then?
spyke, how exactly do I use firmware toolbox to inject the key into the firmware in the CFW folder (I presume that's what I'd inject it) on the pen drive before flashing the benq with it?

sorry for the multiple posts....
do I just open the replacement firmware up from the pen drive with firmtoolbox and cut and paste the key over the "777777777" in the box? Do I need to fill the Tag Data columns?
The tag data columns are blank in my dumped firmware by the way - that normal?
I really do not want to fuck this up, lol

I got impatient and I went ahead and tried it anyway and it went wrong.... powered the 360, then the pc, then I typed "fBen" and put in the serial ... then I pressed y to resend (code was on 0x80) .. plugged in the sata cable and it started flickering D1 again.. so turned it off, then on.. it started erasing the firmware.. then it told me to power off and press return.. so I did.. and it said error "firmware file wrong size"...
any idea what I have done wrong? I have one file in the CFW on the pen drive "BenQ-CFW.bin" (256kb) and I cut and pasted the key into it and pressed replace key button.
I think I've bricked my drive.. :\, please help me.. is there any way out of this mess? what should I do from here? panic-mode ..
I dumped the original firmware twice and it came back with the same key.. I don't understand it.. I figured it would be right

never mind.. it's just me thinking the worst before I actually thought about what may be causing the problem...
I have fixed it and successfully flashed my ixtreme 1.4 5x benq TO ixtreme 1.4.1 5x benq
As I send this post I am now backing up that drive key.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
What a nightmare.

Glad to see all went well. But as long as you have your key there is no reason to panic. A drive is replaceable, a lost or never known key is not replaceable, your 360 is then a brick and there is currently no way of obtaining it once the damage is done.

That's why I started to panic a bit, I thought the drive key was wrong or something and was a bad dump.. but now I know it's the right key everything's great. I think there's something dodgy with the VIA 6214 cards for the only 360-recognised SATA port to be the internal one.

I was having problems with flashing my benq drive as well. tried many different firmware tools and couldn't even get the drive to dump the firmware. i then found this video on youtube and followed it step by step even though i thought i knew what i was doing. i followed it and it worked on my first try.
great video.

Try this exactly, snowman, this is exactly how I did it:
GUIDE TO DUMP CURRENT FIRMWARE & DRIVE KEY
1. Using internal SATA port of VIA 6214 card, plug one end of PC SATA cable into the port...
2. Unplug BenQ's SATA cable, TURN ON 360 (using 360 power supply) with PC SATA also unplugged from 360
3. TURN ON PC, enter y, enter dBen (7 & 5 digit serial on back of console), follow prompts and then press y to resend MTK Vender Intro.
4. Quickly plug other end of PC SATA into 360 drive, it'll start flickering D1, wait 2 seconds and then power 360 off
5. Wait 4 seconds and then then turn 360 back on
6. It should automatically dump firmware, but you may not get a report from firmtool that it's been a success.
It really should work for you.

Yeh just upgraded to iprep 0.6.2 with firmtool 1.2 with the ixDef file updated still nothing, i give up. It is a friends that i am trying to do, oh well at least i got my hitachi done. Thanks for all the help!!!
PS this ixDef file, isnt that what updates when you look for updates on iprep or do you need to do it manually?

Yeah from the menu,
Try unplugging all hard drives and dvd drives and leave only the Memory stick to boot. Unplug one of your DVD drive SATA cables entirely from the MOBO and use that to link the BenQ to the internal SATA on the card with that using my above dumping guide.
I wonder if your friend's drive is one of the unflashable later drives.

Nah they are the Phillips-Liteon this is defo a BenQ, i have all drives unplugged anyway when i try flashing it so who knows why this is not working(PAIN IN THE ARSE) lol

The BenQ's are a pain in the arse for other reasons too.. such as heavy streaming games like GTA IV are unplayable because of the heavy popup issues and slow loading textures. That's something that can only be cured by swapping out the BenQ for an Hitachi or Samsung so I hear. I also hear some people with BenQ's don't have this problem, so maybe some BenQ's are dodgier than others? The only reason I wanted to flash mine was to see if updating the firmware would cure the problem. I knew it was a longshot, but I'm just happy I didn't fuck it up completely.
Looks like the next thing I'll be doing is finding out how to spoof a replacement drive as BenQ.

Just open the firmware of the drive you plan to use in fw toolbox, from there you can spoof it as benq

I'm having similar problems.
Dell Inspirion Intel 2 Quad Core
Windows Vista Home Premium
VIA 6421 Chipset
Iprep v006
I have tried flashing in two different computers (Vista and XP) with both iPrep and DOSflash16. Every time I hang up and cannot dump the firmware. I turned the Xbox360 on and off like ten times under each configuration. The first time I turn it off it goes to OxD1 as described in the tutorial, but when I turn it back on it will not dump and goes to OxD2. I also tried 1 of 4 of the onboard SATA from my motherboard with the same results.

hi dahwee, i hear your problem
seems that flashing 360 drives isn't as simple as just reading a tutorial on the net, i haven't managed to flash any without using trial and error or just asking someone else to do it for me
well, I recently swapped out my Benq for an MS28.. I tried to use an via 6124 pci card but all it ever did was freeze dos (so it was even harder than benq to finally get to flash obviously).. eventually I gave up and got someone else to flash it for me... but the aim of the drive swap (an 8x benq swapped out for an 8x flashed MS28) was to stop the massive popin and extremely beyond normal slow loading textures in GTAIV....
it didn't solve the problem.. all it did was make GTA IV more playable than when I was using the benq drive, and give me faster game loading times between loading screens, and the texture popin and texture loading is slightly improved.. but not cured. Tried both philips & aone discs, burned at 2.4x with a pioneer dvd burner using imageburn.
anyone else managed to solve the GTA IV issues for ixtremes?
