When to use book type in Nero 6.3.0.2

I would like some help in understanding exactly when and why i should tick the 'book type DVD-ROM' box in Nero 6.3.0.2.
From what i can gather it doesn't matter if you use DVD-R discs for burning, or it does if you want standalone players to accept them as DVD+R if they don't accept them already.
Is that correct? I'm confused over this issue.
