okay.. it all started last week. my xbox 360 had a ring of death then i went to youtube and saw some clips on how to temporarily fix your xbox 360 by using towel tricks. the first time i wrapped my xbox 360 with two towels it worked fine. after a week or so which is today, my xbox 360 has a ring of death again. This time i also performed the towel tricks and it did not work. unlike the first time, i turned my xbox system on and it was on throughout the whole 20 minutes of wrapping. This time when i turned my xbox 360 on and wrapped with a towel, after 5-10 minutes. my xbox 360 suddenly turned off. I dont know what to do at this point because the towel trick worked the first time and why isn't it working now? is it because the towel trick can only be performed once? and the thing is that my xbox 360 is warranty voided and i cant send it back. so i am stuck right now. HELP!!!

i heard some rumors saying that if u send a voided warranty to microsoft, they will accept it and will send u a new one? is this true or some hoax?

The towel trick doesn't fix the problem, it's only a bandaid. The problems come back.

As for sending it in, some get away with it and others get caught. Even more so lately. MS is cracking down.

It all depends on why your 360's Warranty is "VOIDED". If it has expired, MS has extended the original Warranties by doubling them. I had a 2yr warranty doubled to Four years etc.....MS has offered to fix ALL RRD errors for free, however it all depends on the VOIDED status of your 360. The turn around time has been cut in half as well. Got mine back in 2 weeks, plus they sent 1 month free XBL card.

Ahhh... there's a catch to that, though. The warranty only covers the original person the console was registered to. And it does clearly state that in the warranty.

Some have been successful in getting the registration changed over to them from the original owner, some have not. It's MSs option to change it or not. It just depend which operator you talk to.

Sup man, i would just buy an X-clamp repair kit off fleebay to fix your rrod.. The kits run between 5 and 20 bucks with shipping, shouldn't be more then that.. I ordered a kit for my brother-in-law's 360 which included 8 M5 bolts,8 metal washers,8 nylon washers,Artic Silver 5/w thermal compound remover and purifier, plus a tutorial w/ pictures for 10 bucks including shipping.. I started working on his 360 last night removing the heatsinks and cleaning the CPU and GPU, i should finish up today once the kit arrives in the mail.. What's crazy is last week i did a case mod for him and one week later the damn thing red rings on him after i peel off the warranty sticker so feel somewhat responsible for breaking it, that's freakin bad luck right there!!! I didn't do anything out of norm,i just upgraded his white case with an old XCM case i had laying around the house.

Try the towel trick one last time, the cpu will get to the point where it shuts itself off. Then throw that box in the freezer. Let it cool in the freezer for like 2 or 3 minutes, the solder should harden and everything should work again. If it works then take the xbox apart and do the xclamp replacement. It's a lot easier if the xbox works when you do the xclamp replacement. If you want to try to do the xclamp replacement right away there's a good tutorial on www.llamma.com

One more pointer, make sure you take the xclamps off straight and don't damage anything on the bottom of the board. I used a solder tool from radioshack which is curved and pointed, they fit right in the ends and it's really easy to get the xclamps off.

Do you guys really think by doing the towel trick that it gets hot enough to melt the solder?

And, even if it did, what else are you getting too hot to cause permanent damage?

Think about it.

The towel trick is not a fix. It does more harm then good.

Do it the right way. Replace the thermal paste with AS5, do whatever xclamp fix you are comfortable with (there are many versions) and add some pennies.

I won't go into details. It's all in a very important sticky right here in this forum that everybody ignores.
