With Custom Firmware, u can do exactly the same thing as official firmware. Plus, u get to have homebrew apps and play downloaded games. I rather upgrade. What firmare do u have ?
You can probably get more info if you google m33 features. On top of playing backed up games and homebrew, you can turn up the CPU on the XMB or during the game seperately. This basically makes the game run smoother at the cost of power. I suggest only using this when the battery is fully charged or if an AC is plugged in, as the battery will drain faster.
Also, theres the recovery menu, which you can access by holding R as you turn on the PSP. In the menu, in configuration, there's a few features you can turn on at your convenience. There's also the CPU options, which aren't necessary if you have the VSH menu enabled so that you can change that stuff in the XMB by pressing select, and some plugin features that you'll have to download to use.
