Circuit City moves toward serious consideration of buyout

article published on 13 May, 2008

The announcement earlier this year by Blockbuster that they were interested in buying the faltering Circuit City consumer electronics chain were largely greeted by skepticism over the video rental giant's ability to finance the $1 billion bid. But at least one major player, Hollywood Video founder Mark Wattles, is more optimistic about the deal's potential. Wattles, whose Wattles Capital ... [ read the full article ]

I cannot believe how worked up some posters get about a retail chain. Perhaps some people should grow up a wee bit before flaming someone else. Especially for stating their opinion.

It wouldn't bother me at all if Circuit City were to disipate out of existence. I've had poor customer service more than once from the hired help and finally quit going all together. So, this certainly would not affect me in any negative way.

The employees I dealt with at CC knew nothing about the products I was interested in. I normally hate commission based sales (especially with buying furniture), but I can see where it would provide a better buying experience in the electronics department, as the sales person really needs to know about the item being sold. It would actually seem like they are working. Last time I went to CC, a tumbleweed blew by and whispers to my wife became like echoes in a valley.

@svtstang
That Guitar Hero experience cracked me up!

Sorry for the mix up. The forum talks about both, which could be "BB". Any of the 3 aren't too stellar for customer service though.

Thus far, i've never had a negative experience with Best Buy's customer service. I've heard multiple people complain about it, but i've yet to have a negative experience with them.

And now that i've publicly said that...i'm gonna have a problem next time i need something.

haha most likely. Yeah same here. Best Buy has always been good to me and they usually know a lot about their products.

I ordered a monitor on CC"s website. It was not available in the stores. I received a defective product (would not turn on). I thought I could return it to a local store. They told me to exchange it for one in the store. Obviously, none in the store. I said credit my charge card. They said ok but we need to charge a restocking fee of 15%. Pure idiots couldn't understand "it doesn't work". Went to customer service desk and they insisted on 15% restocking fee. Made sure customers heard me complain and finally store manager said "pay Him". Sent a letter (snail mail) to company ceo to make him aware of their standard response and was basically told "you got your money, we don't care about anything else" This could be why they are in financial trouble.
Finally got the same monitor at Sams Club. Saved enough to buy a membership and still have some left over.

not only does that make CC instantly f'ing horrible but the prices are about the same. If you want just price, go to Fry's Electronics.
As for customer service, Fry's is the worst which i can't comprehend because they have way more employees that stand around then BB does, and they still don't help you. They usually leave their position and group together to socialize.
Good idea, but, if you're talking a brick & mortar shop.....lot's of people would have a hard time doing so...Fry's isn't in as many locations as CC....I don't have one here. But when I lived in San Jose they were everywhere.

Two years ago at Christmas time I was in Best Buy and saw a product I wanted to buy for both my brothers. My one brother lives clear across the country and my other brother is in the same city. The sales guy told me to hop online and order the items there and they would ship the products for free. This sounded good since the product was heavy and I knew this would save quite a bit of money. I called 1-800-Best-Buy and someone from India answered named "Nancy"... Yea! She not only screwed up the order and the products were shipped to god only knows who but she shipped the $500 gift cards (Times 2) to I guess her friends. After atleast 20 hours of phone calls I got the products shipped to my brothers in February (Merry Christmas) but they refused to re-issue the gift cards so I was out $1000. When I asked that they cancel the order completely they also refused. Best Buy's Highest management claims that it was only a shipping issue. DON'T TRUST THEM... And watch when using their stupid little money back coupons. If you return the item because it's bad they won't refund the money since you used the coupons. They "Stole" $40 when I returned a PSP game that was broken and they didn't have a replacement. Store Manager stated that I didn't actually give them money... No I stole it and I'm now returning it!!!!!!!!

I am having a hard time reading this thread because of all of the whining. Boo Hoo you had a bad experience at a retail store.

It is not the fault of Circuit City or Best Buy when the individual store has lazy employes. Have none of you whiners ever worked for corporate copanies? It is the store manager who hires, trains, and is responsible for the customer service. If the store manager doesn't inspect what he expects, then the monkeys are running the zoo.

All of these complaints don't add up to any kind of evidence that either one of these chains are bad. You all ran into HUMAN BEINGS having bad days perhaps. Every one has a bad day, and every one makes mistakes. If any one tells you that they never make mistakes then they are not only stupid, but they are also liars.

Maybe when you make a mistake at your job you should have to pay for it personaly? Like the idiot who was talking about the typo for the free lap top's. If you owned the company would you honor that add? You need to use a little common sense before you post, and maybe even read what you have written before you post it.

For all of you complainers, stop the whining and go to the store of your choice, because the rest of us don't care.

True, but little to no profits (compared to its competitors) and stock that continually takes nose dives certainly does. Crappy service is just the icing on the cake.

^ Agree.

Let's face it, if i walk into a certain retail chain looking for something specific and am personally more knowledgeable than the minimum wage employee trying to help me out, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

That's before even getting into any real situation where positive service after the sale is neccessary.

In all honesty, you can buy what you're seeking in multiple locations for a relative price. So what keeps any consumer coming back?

Customer service. Period.

I'm sorry to hear about these problems people have encountered at Circuit City. I actually work with them and recommend emailing them at consumer_affairs@circuitcity.com if you ever have a problem. They are actually really responsive and willing to correct any mistakes.

I have the same gripe with Best Buy that I do with CC. Not enough knowledge about the electronic products being sold. But I still choose Best Buy over CC. I happen to study the product I am looking to purchase, so I can't judge CC based on that alone. I'm calling it as I see it. For the average customer, it seems like BB is doing a better job in the sales team training department. I've had better customer service at BB than any CC I've been to. I agree with svtstang. The fact that they are in this situation shows that problems exist on more than a local level. It's a Corporate problem. Two chains sell the same stuff. One chain does much better. Makes sense to me. My CC is right across the road from my BB. There is no competition. One parking lot is full, the other is practically empty. I guess everyone in my area ran into HUMAN BEINGS having a bad day. CC must hire a lot of these HUMAN BEINGS.

There's nothing wrong with people posting their bad experiences. People on this thread are just validating the state CC is in.

Sorry that you took that so personaly. I actualy wasn't talking about you. But since you did take it personal....

"CC must hire a lot of these THESE HUMAN BEINGS", LOL! What is that all about?

Any way if they can whine I can say what I think, and that is that all of the posts got way off the topic, and every one was WHINING. We started out talking about what we thought about Circuit City and Block Buster merging, and ended up comparing the customer service for Best Buy and Circuit City. You call that Validation, and I call it whining. And for the rest of you here is an idea........ SHOP ON-LINE!

lol. I didn't take it personal. I was just messing around. Sorry if my "HUMAN BEINGS" reference upset you (I take it from the bold font that you took it personally). People just get so angry on these threads. Everyone is quick to slam everyone else's opinions. Too many people letting a thread get them angry. Life is too short. Can't we all just get along?

Shopping online is a great alternative as long as I can get free shipping. And Amazon pwns both these retail chains IMO. Any brick and mortar store is really only when the kids or wife want to go to the mall. I might buy a CD at Best Buy...lol...

Yes we can all get along!! LOL. You are a good sport. I as well like to have fun on these forums, just trying to make a point about the direction of the thread. It was way off topic. Maybe we should start one call "Customer Service Sucks!". Then every one can vent to their hearts content. But as far as the font I was typing in last night, I was just feeling kind of Bold Yesterday. LOL

As far as CC is concerned, i'm not sure of their policy for employees, but Best Buy's penetration ratio is huge for extended service agreements. Their associates are trained to ask every single time.

I personally never get them.

I remember when CC was ok some years back, maybe because they were getting commisions or whatever I never really asked, but they were much better than BB, which I tought sucked big time back than and now, so also now I can say they both suck equally, and now I did not have just one bad experinace with BB, I've had several so nobody can lay the somebody had a bad day number on me with that one, it's just a shame CC went that route.

Will say this, I do miss all those smaller chains in my area, like Sasafrass and others in the Philly area anyway, sure they were a little more expensive, but the people there knew thier stuff, and if they didn't they would find out, remember when you were able to test the products, whatever they sold there was always one hooked up, you could see it, test it, try it, any questions and they would be answered on how to work it or hook it up, try doing that at your local CC or BB.
