Xbox not reading backups anymore

Hi All
I have been reading this forum the last couple of days in search of some answers, so hopefully someone can help me with this..
I got my Xbox flashed last year in Jan at a shop, so i dont know the version of the mod, but everything was working fine
Since around December my xbox don't want to read new backups anymore, Originals and movies work 100%. The weird thing is that if i leave the backup in the xbox for a day or so and then switch it on, it actually reads it and i can play the game, untill i restart then it wont pick up anything in the drive anymore. It also doesn't give an error message when i put in backups, it reads for a couple of seconds then just gives the "open tray" option again.
Another weird thing is that one of my older backups Halo, workes fine when i put it in...All the backups are verbatim and i dont backup them myself..
So i have narrowed it down to either 2 things:
a) The lens is faulty or dirty
b) Need to reflash the xbox
Please any advise would be awesome.

I had a bit of the same situation. Mine would only read Mass Effect for some reason...nothing else. I reflashed it...same problem. I readjusted the pot calibration and had mixed results...but still in the end it would only read Mass Effect. Bought a new laser eye...same problem...got another new laser eye...same problem lol.
I ended up giving up on the drive and put in an ms25 that was given to me. It was a Hitachi 47dj originally. The good thing is the 2 new laser eyes will work in the ms25 if needed lol.
Anyway, with that said, I'd give this a shot. It might work for you.

i have managed to get two 47 hitachis to read anything, adjust the pot to 2.8 ohms and also glued to bits of card, about 1mm thick in total to the white plastic that attaches to the laser that touches the switch in the drive that tells the laser to start working, the problem is the position the laser reads back ups on that drive,if you have a look on the back of a back up compared to an original you will see on the ring where the game is burnt, the original disc has a smaller ring, backup has bigger, so laser needs to start reading further away.
google dirty disc or open tray message and you should find a guide
explaining how to do this, not elastic band trick but something similar.

In my situation, I did try that as well. I forgot to mention that in my post above. I was actually going to edit my post to add that info, but decided not to.
Good point though as it does work. Not for me though.

There is a similar fix for Sammy's as well.
The problem is, we have no idea what drive we are working with here from the OP.

I dont know what drive is in the console as i have not opened it up yet... a bit scared off damaging the thing.
It seems to be newer backups doing it, older backups such as 6 months ago still work

I had the same problem with mine. It would play a brand new backup the first time i played it, next time i turned the xbox on, I would get the "disc dirty" message. Tried the pot calibration and again got no joy. Bought a new laser off ebay (a tenner) and again got the same problems, emailed the seller and sent the laser back. A new w=one was sent and it now works great. I'm almost tempted to buy a couple more lasers for backups :)
Anyway, my money is on the laser needing to be changed. What discs are you using? I was advised away from anything other than Verbatims, however knowing best, I purchased some Aone discs which work great, however I am now thinking has it been these that have caused the problem, or is it simply shoddy microsnot products ;)

yea sounds like you know best alright. that media is crap and ruins/strains your laser. way to save money on media tho. congrads.

No, I didn't mean I knew best, far from it, I was being sarcastic towards myself, meaning that although everyone told me to use verb's, i didn't listen to experience and prob ended up busting the laser.
The weird thing is, that when i load a game off the Aone discs, they are very very quiet, whereas the verbs seem ultra loud, and seem to do a lot of "clicking" type noise, almost as if they cant be read. Ah well :)
