I got a pre-modded wii from bangkok, it is NTSC but i am not exactly sure which mod-chip is it.
I did read about the features of the wiikey modchip, and i can do whatever it says like:
Play backed up GC games
Play backed up out of region games
Play ROMS through an emulator which is burned on a disc
so, i just want to know if my modchip is a wiikey or not. is it safe to try and run the wiikey 1.9s update when i don't know if the modchip is a wiikey or not.
if you know any other way to find out which mod-chip a wii has without opening it up please help me.
i also tried to run the wiikey config disc and it booted up, so i tried to install the wiikey 1.9s update, and i got an error something like Error: Test Failed. Check your connections and try again
Well you dont have an offical wiikey since the update failed, but you may have a clone chip.
Unfortuinatly theres no way to check what chip you have short of opening up the console and looking at it. Though if you can open it and post a picture of the chip here someone will be able to tell you what it is.
so even if the wiikey config disc ran, it still is a clone chip because the update failed?
i saw a video of the same error i have on youtube, and one of the comments were to eject the disc before the trial run. i did this and the trial run was successful, but then i wasn't sure if i should put the disc back in and continue the update or not.
any thanks will be really appreciate as i really want to SSBB on my wii.
Check the serial number of the unit against what modchip is recommended for the unit. There are postings here or you could google it.
There are many modchips available allowing dvd-r to be recongnised by the drive. This is why the config disc runs. It may not update as you may have anyone other type of modchip- a clone, d2ckey, infectus argon, wasabi, etc
