Hi

I have been using NeoDVD to convert AVI files to DVD and burning them using NEro. No probs!
However - some of the files I get are widescreen format, 352X240 for example.Neo however will only convert the files to 720x576. This means that, although I get the whole picture , it is compressed horizontally and stretched vertically.

Not ideal really! Are there any programs that will allow me to clip the size?

Ta

hiya heCTiC,

you should check out TMPGEnc from the software section (to download) and also look in the guides section for basic usage tips.

Thanks for getting back so quick Drchips.

I have TMPGEnc installed but the only guide for AVI to dvd that I have seen which uses TMPGEnc talks about extracting the audio and subtitles etc - http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_avi_to_dvd_page.

Tmpgenc takes a lot longer than Neo and for the downloaded files that I have the quality from Neo is fine. Just drop in the .AVI files and get a DVD out the other end :)

Do the AC£ audio files etc need to be extracted?

Hiya,

I tried to have a look at the guide you are using, but the link just 404's on me, so it may be a bit difficult following what you are doing...

TMPGEnc will take some time, because quality costs.

You can pretty much do whatever you want with TMPGEnc, it is so powerful, but it takes some work to learn.

If the best possible quality is important to you, then there really is no other choice.

Which is most important? video quality or sound quality or equally important?

DVD has a maximum bitrate, that has to contain video and audio streams, how you allocate that bitrate is up to you (within reason, of course).

Use GSpot to interrogate your AVI's and we will go from there.

Have Fun...

Hey Drchips

The file is a downloaded movie - 188Mb
Gsopt says MPEG 4 V3 352x240 425kb/s 14.98 fps
I had another nosey at Tmpgenc and have found the clipping section - I will have to look at it more - a powerful tool indeed.

I just want the quality to be good enough to let me watch the movie comfortablt on my TV but Neo is squeezing it all to fit it into 720x576.

I do not expect great quality as it is not there to begin with. I have ripped DVD etc and had no probs - thanks the the help files here of course:)

This is my first post. I dont mind loosing some screen at the sides. It will take Tmpgenc 10 hours and then some to convert it to DVD. This will only take about 2 hours in Neo and will already be in a video_ts file - nice and neat :)

PS - I have placed the file in to tmpgenc and started it processing - it says there will be 2 output files a wav and an mpeg - sound about right?
