Need to cut out part of a video

I just tried VobBlanker; it's not exactly intuitive.
I need to cut a couple of minutes out of a ripped video before I burn it. I'd like the process to be as easy as marking start & end points to cut our everything in between. I'd also like to be able to hear the audio during the preview, to make selecting those start & end points easier.
Eventually, I'd like to find something that will allow me to edit video with various fades and swipes, add audio, and slow motion or accelerated playback.
Is there such an animal? Maybe even a freeware option?

For just cutting a part from a video, use DVD Shrink and the "Re-Author" function.

Really?
I've been using Shrink for a while, but I thought the re-author only allowed you to cut out parts from the beginning or end of a movie, not something out of the middle.

It is actually very simple, jut a little play around. You load the movie twice in DVD Shrink's Re-author window.
You have:
- point A(the beginning of the movie),
- point B(the beginning of the part you want to remove),
- point C(the end of the part you want to remove), and
- point D(the end of the movie).
Like I said, you drag the movie in the Re-Author window twice. You will have Title 1 and Title 1(2).
Title 1-> you cut everything from point B to point D.
Title 1(2)-> cut everything from point A to point C.
This way you will remove the segment BC and will be left with the segments AB and CD.
Hopefully all works good.

For this I would suggest Mpeg Video Wizard DVD. Not sure about slow motion or accelerated playback with this one.

I want to avoid commercial software until I know more about editing. Don't want to pay $100 for something, only to realize later it's not what I really needed.
I'd like to find a little freeware app that will:
+ easily cut out parts of a ripped video
+ splice together things recorded with a video camera
+ add audio/music to a video
Once I'm comfortable with that stuff, I'll look into one of the commercial applications.

You might be able to do that with a couple free programs. Did you try Windows Movie Maker first?

You found a VobBlanker too complicated. That is what you get from free software. They are good, but not user friendly so if you want something for nothing, you will have to spend some time learning the curves.

Looks like Windows Movie Maker will open avi, mpg, and other self-contained video formats. I've got the ripped contents of a DVD in VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders. Windows Movie Maker can't do anything with that, right?

Join the vobs with the append function of avidemux (rename them mpg... they are mpeg2 files anyway) and then use the edit function to rip out what you don't want. Use any free dvd authoring tool to make a new dvd structure with the resulting large joined mpeg ;) easy enough?. You windows people make everything so ----ing hard sometimes.

LOL, "some"( and I don't think just Windows) people make everything so f@$%#1ng hard sometimes:~)! If all you want is to cut out a part of the movie, no need to use 2 applications, DVD Shrink is all you need, like I said in my post above. Even a caveman can do it, jeez!
If you want more than just to cut out a piece, and you want to be able to import the movie in Windows Movie Maker for example, use Avidemux to join the VOB files and change the container to mpeg,like suggested above, or use Vob2mpg(also free). Just changing the extension might work also, give it a try.
If WMM doesn't suffice, you can try another free appication, Videospin, from Pinnacle:

prolly 2 title sets (ifo / bup / vob)
i would take all vobs (video parts) and place in a separate folder then use IFOEDIT v96 (stable version) and use the button CREATE IFO's (keep destination folder same as vobs!)
you must rename them consecutively before creating ifo/bup!!!
xxxxx1.vob
down to
xxxxx6.vob
etc
first set will be 1 to 3 or whatever amount already done, its the second set you follow on with/rename. rename to 4 5 6 etc.
VTS_01_1.vob
VTS_01_2.vob
VTS_01_3.vob
VTS_01_4.vob
VTS_01_5.vob
VTS_01_6.vob
you will get 1 set of ifo/bup for your set then and burn.
sounds alot but very easy.
