Hi all,
I'm sure that this has been answered umpty-million times here, but the answers are all over the map and unclear. Here's what I need:
I have acquired a PSP-1001 that has been modded with Dark Alex firmware - I want it gone and back to Sony firmware because I've purchased some games through my PS3 that won't run.
I've tried a number of things that I've read online, and managed to get the system back to 1.50, then installed Sony UMD updates to 2.71 but that's as far as it'll go. 3.95 won't install. I tried running Key Cleaner, but that won't run either. I read about running recovery mode and disabling a few things, but I haven't been able to get the device to start up in recovery mode again.
Is there any way of getting this thing back to stock firmware? It's not bricked, but it's not where I want it either.
Thanks!
Phideaux

if you definitely want to go official, try updating to 3.52 first. Get the update HERE. Although im pretty sure its possible to play the PS store games on CFW on the newer M33 firmwares. You may want to look into that before you update, as if you go to 3.95 the only way to move back to CFW is with Pandora and MMS.

Nope - that won't load either. I'm getting the following error:
"The system configuration of this PSP system does not appear to be correct. The update cannot be completed. Contact technical support for assistance. (DRNFFFFFFCD)
Any ideas?

im not 100% sure tbh, i haven't seen this question asked before, not many people want to move to OFW from CFW.
So you are currently on the 2.71 firmware from sony? Have you tried updating using the Network Update feature on the PSP?

I'm pretty sure it's from Sony. Once I discovered that it had Dark Alex on it, I ran a utility that brought it down to 1.50 and then I was able to do a couple UMD installs from there, but it won't let me get any higher that 2.71.
I'm pretty new to all this. All I want this thing for is to play OEM games, so I don't need hacked firmware.

Try the network update feature from the PSP itself (assuming you are near a wireless access point. The PSP will then download and install the update for you :)

I have done a bit of research for you, and it seems that this error occurs when a TA-82 motherboard PSP is moved to CFW, as it can damage some of the storage keys. You can fix this using keycleaner...but to use that you will need CFW, which you moved away from (which is why it didnt work when you tried to run it.
So, as far as i can see, you have 2 options:
1. call sony, although they will likely not replace it as it will be out of warranty...worth a try though. Just make sure you tell them you have bought it second hand and it had 2.71 on when you bought it (meaning you don't have any idea about its CFW history).
2. Move back to CFW (this will be easier as you are only on 2.71 FW), run the key cleaner to fix the issue, then move to 3.90 M33-3, which will let you play all of your PS Store games.
They are the only options i can see, although someone with a better knowledge than myself may have more idea's.

Okay, I'll give that a try. Where can I find the files I need to go to CFW?
Thanks!

THIS is the link you need to downgrade your 2.71 to 1.50. from here you will need to upgrade to CFW (use THIS guide for that).
Make sure you read the read-me files on the downgrader before running it, and follow the guide to the letter to avoid any complications.
let us know how you get on :)

Man, I'm 2 seconds away from throwing this damn thing through a window. This "dark alex" jackass makes WAY too many assumptions throughout written the instructions.
They need to be written as if one has never picked up a PSP before.

What problems are you having exactly?
to be fair, D_A has done a lot for the PSP scene (probably more than anyone else on the planet), he puts time and effort into helping US, he can't be blamed if someone doesn't understand how to use his files.
That's what forums like this are for...to help people who are having trouble.
