Okay, my friends PS3 bricked on him. It has the flashing red light of death. I've heard of it being caused somehow by Call of Duty 4, but this was not the case. I wasn't there when it happened, but he tells me that he turned it on, looked at the XMB for a while and then it cut off. When he tried to turn it back on, a yellow light came on, and then it turned red and started flashing over and over. It's completely bricked. No picture, no sound.
He called Sony and told them, and they asked for his receipt. Since he doesn't have his receipt, they told him it would cost $150 to be repaired and he refuses to pay that cost. He says the console had NOT overheated because his room was cooled. He says his hardrive is the problem because he restored the system back to original and wiped all the data a while back. And had been acting strange beforehand(It was completely filled before being restored).
Now he insists that by replacing the hard rive, the console will work again, but i'm not convinced. I want to help him out so my question to anybody who knows, is is the hard drive the problem? Is it a burned out chip inside? Or is it something else?
And more importantly, can it be fixed without paying Sony $150.00? Any help is appreciated. Thanks
The hard drive wouldn't prevent it from booting up. Sounds like a hardware failure. The ps3's firmware has all the system software and the information on the hard drive is just user information, saves, media, etc. He's more than welcome to remove the hard drive and try turning it on, though. With no hard drive in, it could give some kind of message if that's the cause.
yea man....unfortunately your friend is one of the VERY VERY VERY few people who have experianced this but the yellow light is equivalent to the red rings of death on the Xbox 360 soooo ur dealing with Hardware failure....this happens to 1 out of 1000 PS3 if u ask my opinion cuz i hav only herd 2 cases of this....urs and the guy who first got it...since this doent happen often many installers outside dont know how to fix it like the RROD sooo Sony is the Only Option ur friend has...
@Aceman82
Hey dude, I had the same problem with my newly bought refurbished 60GB PS3. Here is my topic... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/658127 The video just crapped out and no more picture, sound, nothing... I go the yellow light and then red flashing and it didn't want to work. I hooked the hard drive up to my PC and reformatted it and tried some other stuff, no luck. Called Sony and asked for help, but they were useless LOL I tried everything and thought of buying another HardDrive but that would not help, it was a hardware failure and I returned it for a 80GB which I just recently got a phone call saying they receieved another 60GB refurbished and can exchange my 80GB back in for it. So i'm gonna do that and get my 60GB back since its one of the best models I think... U can read about the situation in that link I gave u. I recommend returning it or it needs to get fixed.
Hey people I just got the yellow light and the bricked up system as well. I have had my PS3 for one and a half to two years around there and it finally gave out on me. So the only way to get it fixed is to turn it in to Sont and pay $150. Cause my warranty has expired and im pretty sure my local game store would be useless.
I don't know what caused it. I came home from my friends house then i looked at my PS3 and the light was blinking red and tried to turn it on and the light went green for one second then yellow then back to the flashing red light. So am I screwed and have to pay the $150 to repair it?
all the people who bricked there ps3's I will pay 225 shipped for it. Thats right I will buy your broken ps3's no questions asked no matter the condition. email
