not really. personal preference-best thing is go to all respective websites see which one you feel more comfortable with-ie. install friendy, tuts, forums etc. which type of updates they provide-updates via dvd, flat cable.which ver. you feel more comfortable using as far as updating goes. i can tell you argons tuts are hard to follow and its forums leave a lot to be desired in fact all the help i needed i got from afterdawn-with that said the selling point for me was their chip can be reconfigured via(flat cable) should the games be "changed" as far as being read goes where as other chips would have to be replaced-all together im fairly new to all this but i think thats the jist of it all anyone else care to chime in?

thanks mark,
that was useful.
the reason why i was asking is because i thought that some modchips are safer/better than others but it seems that the difference is only due to individual preference.
can i ask how safe these modchips are?
how likely are they to break my wii and have there been any reported cases?
thanks again,
Mubs

My opion would be to get the wii-key if your console has the D2B chipset w/o the pins cut-out!! as it's cheap as chips, personally id go for the D2PRO9 as theres alot of support for this new chipset,it's now upgradeable via programmer and aslo DVD!!, it's simple to install in the D2B's bit trickier on the D2C's,
All in all if you hate soldering order the wii-key with wii-clip!! and bobs your uncle or your Auntie in drag;)

All your questions, and then some, will be anwered by searching through the archives of this forum. There's several threads that discusses the pros and cons of various mod chips. The basic answer is: They all work but have various (and minor) differences. Until you open it up though and find out what chipset you have you're wasting money buying one over the other.

i went on the above link and put in my serial number...

There is a 37% chance that your drive chip is a GC2R-D2A
and a 63% chance that it is a GC2-D2B.
Your Drive Pins are most likely not cut.
what does it mean? im still willing to open up m wii to check the chipset.
thanks again

Was this a refurbished Wii? Get it off Ebay? Or did you buy it in a retail store?
You more then likely need to get a Modchip that supports DMS/D2A/D2B drive boards. If you got it from Ebay or if it was a refurbished Wii then you should defiantly check first before ordering a Modchip because a D2C drive possibly could have been replaced into the unit.
If it is DMS/D2A/D2B then buy...
An Open Source Modchip

Coming soon but not yet supported ARGON.
If it is a D2C drive board then buy a ...

You have a few choices. But you will never get everyone to agree with which 1 is better.

Hey larrylje, ur right its an endelss debate, think you did a typo, d2pro wont work with DMS/D2A/D2B(unless you solder on the spi flash seperate), the new d2pro9 with spi flash will;)

thanks for that,
no i bought it from a retail store ages ago.
how do i check if my drive pins are cut or not?
because the wiikey will only work WITHOUT the pins cut on a d2b chipset.
