Nintendo Wii sets software sales record

article published on 22 May, 2008

Nintendo of America's VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway has announced that the Wii has already sold over 50 million units of software since its launch (18 months ago) and that the figure is a new record. The previous record, 42 million units sold in 18 months, was from the launch of the PlayStation 2 in late 2000. As a comparison, in the first 18 months of their lifecycles ... [ read the full article ]

How can something that is so fun to play and that appeals to gamers of all skill levels make you mad? Just because they found a way to make a system that can incorporate gaming, exercising, and social get togthers instead of just making a more powerful system that does the same old thing that pisses you off?

Nintendo has done well and the numbers prove it. I enjoy the fact that it has given the ability for people that are not hardcore gamers the chance to play games and have fun with a console. I hope wii continues to do well and that nintendo continues to do this with their future consoles.

>appeals to gamers of all skill levels
>gamers of all skill

Gamers of all skill means casuals! I know a hardcore nintedo fanboy, would was all hyped about getting a wii, he's sold it know and bought a 360! The wii is a gimmick, which is bought my the mass market casual gamers! The poor library of games it have shows even more that it is for casuals! No 'gamer' would buy that thing!

IMO that figure is actually not that impressive TBH, i mean think of the number of consols it has sold in that tiem frame, its over 25 million(number from vgchartz), so thats like the console + 1 game! I mean seriously, that extremly poor! Once again proving no other company bar nintendo can make a profit of this gadget!

Everytime this thing is mentioned i just RAGE inside, when i hear complete idiots going OH WOW THIS IS GREAT, I just RAGE, when i see this on the new, and adults playing Wii Sport going OMG THIS IS AMAZING, I just RAGE inside! THis thing is simply made to make gamers RAGE inside!

You just got to face facts, let alone it mainly started with Nintendo anyway, games are not just for hardcore gamers even though I'm one myself. I love my Wii and I got a Xbox, love that system too. Now my collection will be complete with a PS3 this summer. All three systems have something different to offer. But back on topic, I'm happy for Nintendo, keep doin' ya thing.

Sounds like someone needs to look into anger management. I consider myself a "gamer" and maybe I am not as "hardcore" as some but I have been playing video games since Atari 2600. I also own an XBOX 360 and I have to agree that each system offers something to gamers of different types. I do not think Nintendo has a "poor" library as there are many games on the Wii that are available for all systems. The only thing I will give is that there are quite a few of the "mini" games series of titles out there but from what I see the titles that are available for all platforms are the same with the exception that the 360 and the PS3 can offer the better graphics. I guess I am the type of Gamer that can enjoy a game of Wii Sports or Mario cart and then hop over to my 360 and play a little GTA, Halo, or Gears of War.

I want to add that many of the gamers that consider themselves extreme hard core end up being cocky little punk teenagers and I have probably met a few of you online in XBOX live. Some of you need to get a life and realize that gaming is not the only thing out there and having a bad attitude doesn't make you hardcore.

Love it or hate, the numbers are difficult to argue.

However, there's other numbers i'd love to see.

I would love to know how many people bought a Next Gen console then got sick of it and sold it.

I just bought the Wii Fit today, ... I LLLLooovvvee it. I for one am glad that Nintendo has finally won it's way back to number one. I never gave up on them (although I didn't play very much of the cube, but I didn't play PS2 or PS1 either)

I agree. I'm glad Nintendo is on top for many reasons. They proved that consoles don't have to be a luxury item with a high price tag and be made for large disc capacity or high definition. Sure, all of those things are fine and dandy, but what exactly does someone do with a game like GTA if they never played video games before? (Let alone it's not for small kids!)

On the other hand, I have a 360 that acts wonky half the time, and I've let my Xbox Live subscription lapse, because online gaming doesn't do it for me. I miss the good old days of inviting friends over and watching them take someone out from split screens, rather than some whiny voice masked brat that has more hours in a day than I do to learn every nook and cranny on a Halo map!

And to trash the game library of the Wii is unfair. Many games are released for all of the consoles. Some that are "exclusive" to the Wii are either mostly fantastic 1st party Nintendo franchises or licensed movie/tv/kiddie crap, which used to show up on PS1 and PS2 when it was the "King of the Mountain".

And while I'm on my soapbox, I always hated most of the 1st party offerings Sony put out. NFL Gameday? Crap. Crash Bandicoot? Crap. It was 3rd party games like GTA, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and even NFL FOOTBALL (anyone remember the unlicensed Madden 64?) that made the Playstation 1 and 2 so strong.

Now that the playing field is more wide open, Nintendo is taking charge by hedging their risk on what they believe the core gaming demographic is, and so far they have been correct.

hmm it includes WiiPlay? according to VG Chartz there has been more than 12million WiiPlay sold. Minus the WiiPlay and it still doesnt beat the PS2. I dont think the PS2 ever had a bundle with a game like that to increase software sales. But these days thats how marketing is and numbers shouldnt mean much when it comes to something like that. Like of the +18million xbox360 sales, how many were bought only cuz the RROD killed them? But the Wii did have sum killer games to get this far so congrats!

You're just mad because every time you try to buy one they're all sold-out on you.

I have all three systems, but my favorite is Wii

360 has a big library of games but Wii has good games not available on the other systems. And the fun gameplay is a great reason not to sell the system. PS3 will have exclusive games too but most dual-console games look better on the 360.

Are accessories (Remotes/Nun-chuck/Wheel) included in that calculation?

The figure quoted is for software, so I imagine that the above wouldn't be included. As for WiiPlay, this is not mentioned, so it could be included and would "fudge" the figures somewhat. I should also point out that this is the VP of sales' quote. Exactly how "official" these figures are would have to be confirmed with an official press release to excite me in any way.

I totally agree with some people that the wii is rather gimmicky, but that is as much its virtue as its vice and exactly the reason why it has done so annoyingly well. Being totally different to anything else means that it is able to co-exist with the more hardcore gaming experiences available.

the leader of the next generation consoles is the one with fun games and an innovative control system, who would have thought that this would win over, more of the same games and endless sequels with improved graphics on the 360/ps3.

lets hope they don't sink to the same level of graphics are the only way forward!

The Conduit displays Xbox 360-like graphics on Wii
Quote:
Despite a lack of pedigree, long-time developer High Voltage Software piqued the interest of dissatisfied Wii owners over the weekend by showing an impressive-looking first-person Wii exclusive.

The Conduit trailer, released on Saturday, displays graphics that rival that of early Xbox 360 games by some standards, including advanced lighting, environmental memory, and detailed level design. The exclusive shooter, still without a publisher, uses the proprietary Quantum3 graphics engine, which was built from the ground up to achieve better-looking Wii games.

"Most of the games on Wii look like crap," said High Voltage's Eric Nofsinger in an interview with IGN last month. "We want to change that, so we've invested heavily in our Wii tech over the past year."

High Voltage founder Kerry Ganofsky added: "We believe that third-party developers need to step up to the plate and deliver. The Wii platform is capable of a lot more than what consumers have seen so far. We're hoping to raise a new bar."

In an effort to quickly cash-in on early Wii success, many publishers have released undercooked or lazily ported games with PS2-like graphics on Wii, even though the system was quoted as being 50 percent more powerful than the last-gen GameCube.

While The Conduit may look impressive as an unfinished Wii game, it should be noted that High Voltage Software has a reputation for releasing poorly-rated games on multiple platforms since the developer opened its doors in 1993.

so the attach rate appears to be 4.1 (conservatively) you can knock 1.2 off it(they added 10M copies of wiiplay, shame shame shame) so 3.9 or 2.9, now what this means is 2-3 games per console.

This my friends is a low number IMO, it should be double it easily, should be 4-6%.

because of the overt "casual focus" you wont have alot of stable game buys.

LOL @ MrXenu

/Nintendo Wii FTW!

I have yet to figure out why people hate this console so much. It's pretty disturbing IMO. MrXenu is a prime example of this.

NINTENDO WII FTW 1000000%!!!!!

People seem to hate huge selling hits like the Wii, just because the PS3 and X360 were left in the dust (comparing to the Wii sales) worldwide...

That kind of anti-wii posting is called "Deep Frustration"...

And now, let the PS3 fanboys barge in against my comment!

Nintendo learned alot from their mistakes that they had made with the Gamecube launch, when compared to the Wii launch.

First they made sure their pricing strategy different from their competitors. When the GC launched, it was $200, and did not include DVD playback or any online compatibility. The PS2 and Xbox had both and were $50-$100 more during GC's shelf life. The Wii is positioned much cheaper than the competition now, and also makes Nintendo a profit TODAY, which the GC was eating away at Nintendo. Nintendo also included WiFi into the Wii, and a web broswer. I know their online is not like Xbox Live at the moment, but neither is Sony's.

PS2 was backward compatible with PSX games, controllers and other accessories. Nintendo obviously kept this in mind with the Wii's backward compatibility to the GC, along with VC games.

PS2 also had a year start and a killer 2001 holiday game lineup, plus the Xbox launched around the same time as GC, which also hurt Nintendo. Star power in the GC launch and holiday lineup essentially killed alot of interest as well. Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime didn't release until nearly a year after the GC's launch, and Zelda: the Wind Waker took 2 years to release!

Outside of Luigi's Mansion, titles such as Tony Hawk and Madden were already available for the PS2. The Wii had the largest launch lineup of any system launch to date, and it included Zelda. Metroid Prime and Mario came alot sooner than they did on GC, plus A+ titles such as SSBB and Mario Kart are here now.

Face it, the GC was hideous in design. The color purple wasn't that stylish, and some people had a gripe with the controller design (IMHO it was too small.) The Wii is alot more stylish, looking like something Apple would put out.

Those are my opinions on why Nintendo scored better with the Wii this time around. If you look at the failures they made with the GC and compare, it's easy to see Nintendo learned from their mistakes.

Thought the modchip culture was killing off the sales.

Or is that just a line big companies like to spout out about?

The correct answer is option B

The same goes for the RIAA and MPAA that cry when they blame P2P and the internet (piracy) for the lack of music and video sales.

My parents even have a wii, dont think theyve bought a game though but according to these figures they have since they got the remote for $30 with game...how many million software sales are like this? I got 3 of these remotes and gave the games to people who missed these bundles my only gripe about that software sales.

I wont deny it even with including these somewhat false numbers that it still would of broke the record will be interesting to see what happens in the coming months/years for sales numbers.

its amazing to me. how a white flat coloured game cube is selling so much more.

no one gave a shet about gamecube hardly, but as soon as they over clock it like 8mhz and give it a different name it sells a buttload.

but to me this oen last long. these lousy benchmarks amount to nothing. cause this system prolly wont last more than 2 years tops before it runs out of new ideas. specially the shetty graphics holding it back for one thing.

and the lack of quality control since the 80% of the games are crap. and the good 20% come from the first party only.

Well it has been going for over a year and half of being continuously sold out everywhere you go. No other system can say that. Also lack of quality control and nintendo isn't something I would ever put in the same sentence. Can't speak for the 3rd party developers but Nintendo always seems to deliver fun games that you can play over and over. They have since the original NES which is why people download the games nintendo released 20+ years ago.
