hi guys, doing my first hitachi 79fk. i understand it is only possible to hack if you desolder? also if i had a diff drive is it possible to get the drive key off of it with out all of the desoldering? thanks. homesick

It's a tough job. You have to removed that epoxy resin. Then there is the de-soldering and soldering. There are small points and it's easy to mess up. You'll need a passkey chip as well.

thanks guys, lol i did two yesterday an ms-25 and then i got this 79. wow what a beeze a ms-25 is! so anyway you all know me a little bit and that i actually have some common sense. i want to try this 79 for my buddy his box is kinda crapin out on him anyway. so do any of you have a good like or maybe a tut for JUSt this drive?

Have you tried checking out YouTube? I've seen a few vids of people removing the epoxy and also some installing the Passkey on a 79.

As for tuts, I don't think there's really anything else needed besides the installation diagram.

This video right here shows a guy installing a passkey.By the way the passkey automatically puts the drive in mode B so no need to do that with SLAX 2.Hope this helped.

What I did was use Jasco Epoxy Remover to get the Black Epoxy off.If you need a way to get the Black Epoxy off this is the best method so far I could find.I tried the hot air gun method and it didn't work for me.
