Hi guys,
again I want to share with you another idea.
With the launch of the WiiWare concept, the accelartion in the port of oldies under the VC concept, and the official worry of Nintendo executives about the lack of memory that plagues the WII, it is normal that the company should be looking for alternatives or corrective actions.
In fact, Many users are faced to deleting their downloaded VC titles because of the lack of space (I dont know if they have to pay for the same game again when they want to download it another time), which, to my sense, threaten the development of these concepts (WIIWARE and VC)
I will present you the possible paths available and I would appreciate if you could give me your thoughts.
Option 1: allow the use of the SD as a virtual RAM through a firmware update.
Option 2: allow the use of the SD as a storage place for VC, Wiiware, misc channels, and gamesaves through a firmware update.
Option 3: combine option 1 and 2.
Option 4: Launch a new WII model with a larger amount of memory (and say sorry for the people who bought it before).
Option 5: Keep things as they are and promise that the next generation console will be very powerful.
Thank you for sharing ur thoughts
Yea this lack of internal memory is really bad planning buy Nintendo. Did they not expect this to happen?
Anyways I hope they do something about it soon, as I have lots of wii points and plan to buy my favorite games on VC as they come out.
Being able to play games off SD card would be a great and simple solution to all of these problems, but it's not a new idea. People have been talking about it for a while now. Wii is just so weak compared to the gigabytes of hard space on other consoles.
I truly hope Nintendo comes up with a solution for this.
thx for the reply, I never said these are new ideas, just thoughts gathered from different sources. I was more trying to get input as of the feasibility of the options.
Actually 512 Mb of Ram is a good amount if it was dedicated only to gaming and running the basic os.
Actually, as far as I know, the wii os isnt stored in the 512mb memory.
But if the onboard memory was only dedicated to save games then it would be more than sufficient. 512mb is room for hundreds of game saves. It's the VC and wiiware stuff thats the problem.
that's true too. I thought I was running out of space today but I download a virtual console game today and it took up ~50 blocks and I had 500 left.
Still, who knows how many VC titles I will want to get over the years. I would never hesitate to BUY (not WAD install) a good game, for eg. If super mario RPG, chrono trigger, SNES Final Fantasy Games, Smash Bros 64 , DK64, etc. Were to come out I wouldn't hesitate to buy them, and I can see where this lack of memory may become an issue.
There is some hope though, as Iwata from Nintendo addressed the issue in a press conference at the beginning of may, so chances are nintendo will be providing a solution to this problem.
Will it be as simple as using SD card as wii memory? Probably not, they will probably introduce another expensive accessory to plug into USB and add more memory to your wii.
Actually I forgot that the Wii has its memory separatly in which the os and game run. I guess they will extend the external memory to the front SD, which to my sense is the most straight forward way. Is it feasible through a newer firmware? BTW, does the WII support 4GB SD? If not could it be done thrugh a firmware update if they decided to?
