I just got a wireless adapter for my 360 and when i try and connect it to my router it shows that it is connected but the IP test always fails. the IP is set on automatic on the xbox and i have never had trouble connecting to xbox live with a cable. is there anything i can do to fix this?

Are you trying to connect the xbox wirelessly?

What type of router is it?

those are usually pretty good. are you connecting the cord straight to the router, or are you doing it wireless?

I tried both and it said it failed the IP test with both of them.
I called linksys and they said i had to change the settings for 3 of the ports.

Call MS, they can help you walk through some steps.

Try to turn everything off on your network then resetting your modem, also make sure you set your router to accept your xbox, mine shows a pic of the xbox in the settings of the router which also is a linksys.

You may have MAC address filtering setup on your Router and therefore it isn't allowing the Xbox 360 MAC address through onto the network, thus the Xbox is not assigned an IP address.

On your Router settings page (Go to your web browser and type 192.168.2.1 and press enter. This should take you to the router settings page) and look for anything about MAC addresses. If you see that MAC address filtering is turned on, turn it off OR add the Xbox MAC address to the allow list.

If you are able to do this, it should work.

1. try opening the ports first, most routers do not need it but some will. The following ports must be available for Xbox Live to operate correctly:
? UDP 88
? UDP 3074
? TCP 3074

2. Then you can try the MAC address although i have never heard of that as the solution before. But who know, with networking there can be many things that it could be. And for a lot of router the address to access your settings is 198.162.1.1 (if you want to know for sure bring up the command prompt, which is under accessories in your start menu, and type ipconfig/all and look for the number it lists under default gateway)

3. Try messing with the UPnP settings, in other words if it is on then turn it off, or the other way around.

4. Make sure you actually have a wireless network set up on your PC

5. Make sure you have internet sharing enabled on the PC

6. Also check Xbox.com as they have many tutorials on getting connected. Last time i called Linksys about an NAT problem with my Xbox they ended up killing my router (by updating the firmware) with their bad suggestions on how to fix it. So Tech support is probably your last option since those people generally know nothing and are just reading basic things from a book. I kept insisting that they were on the wrong track and they kept insisting i do the update. So to shut them up i did. And it did nothing but brick the router which they then had to replace. At least i got a much newer model for free.

one question, the wireless adapter you have. Is it the official adapter or is it a ethernet adapter from another company? And (if other brand) is it on the Xbox Live compatibility chart at Xbox.com?
