Hi, I thought I'd post this here first! as I like this site the most, it's helped me out learning more about consoles than any other site.
soooo..... I looked around the web to fix this 3 light(Ring of Death). Someone came up with a towel trick(?????????WTF??????????) why would someone wrap up a 360 in a towel to heat it up and probably blow some other chips????
Anyway.... As I was looking around the web I browsed youtube watched a few clips and came to my amazement poeople were dropping there 360's on the floor and making out they worked, this was funny, but still no joy on fixing the 360....
DID ANYBODY KNOW!!! WHY!!! the 360 flashes different lights when you hold in the wireless button and press eject???? - I don't know what each means but I do know that......
THE FIX!!!!!!!!
1. Take out your mobo
2. Remove the X Clamps
3. Wipe the heat paste on the chip and the heatsink to make it FLAT!
4. Bend the X Clamps a little (the way they are already bent) to give more leaveredge on the heatsink to the GPU chip
5. Place X Clamps back in then fit mobo and everything back
6. Switch on 360
7. You should still have Ring of Death! WHY!!!!! (Because you need to reset the 360!!!!!!!!
RESET 360!!!!!!!
1. Switch 360 on and wait for Ring of Death
2. Hold wireless button in on the console and Tap the Eject Button until you see 2 lights
3. When 2 lights are lit let go.
4. Now hold in the wireless button again and press the off button
SWITCH ON CONSOLE!!!!
I have fixed 2 consoles that my friends had in a cupboard they thought was useless!!!! hahahahaha they overjoyed.
I fixed 1 5 days ago and not errored once and just done 1, about 2 hours ago. This confirmed it worked for me and thats why I am telling people about it!!
If someone can try this on their 360 and post that it worked I would really appreciate it.
ALSO YOU DON'T NEED TO BUY THE X-CLAMP KIT
JUST BEND THE CLAMPS IN THE CONSOLE A LITTLE MORE FOR EXTRA PULL!
HOPE THIS HELPS YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found this fix just by luck by the way lmao.

It does work, don't know what the other sequence of lights mean though e.g pressing the wireless button then eject, as it shows all lights first then 1 light, then 2, and back to ring of death, I think what I did was reset the bios or reset a LOG file or somert which basically told the xbox that there is no problems and as I re fitted the heatsink, It isn't finding any problems which = no ring of death = good xbox. If i get another xbox with the R.O.D then I will take photos and write tutorial or put video on youtube, but at the mo I aint got no broke 360.

What's the guarantee if it doesn't work?
Really though, this is no differnet than any other clamp fix.
The problem with any x clamp fix is that basically the fix just "smashes" the cpu/gpu against the mobo. That's not really fixing the problem considering the solder connections are still busted. The only way to really fix them is to reflow the board.
MS uses lead free solder which has a melting point of about 217c, or 423f. Some people have used a heat gun to heat up the gpu, but without some way of knowing the temp, you really don't know if the process is working.
I've done 4 fixes my self in the past on out of warranty consoles, before the 3yr warranty kicked in. I did 2 using the x clamp and 2 using new bolts/washers. What I did differently is instead of a heat gun, I used my stove.
I put the mobo in before I started the oven. I set my temp to 430F and just let the board preheat with the oven. I let them sit at 430F for about 5 minutes. Then I'd shut it off, leave the door closed, and let the board cool back to room temp inside the oven.
To this day, all 4 consoles are still working... and it's been well over a year since I did the last one. But I don't offer to fix them anymore. Seeing how MS extended the warranty. I always recommend sending it in. The people who've asked me to repair them have been lucky enough to still have their warranty sticker (when I do a flash for someone, I always save their warranty sticker).
The problem with the method I used is I really don't know if 5 minutes is long enough.... or maybe is it too long? Yea, the consoles are still running, but it's too hard to say if it's just due to luck or not... and how much longer will they keep working.
By sending it in, you'll also get the new heat sinks. And MS has the new Opus mobo which they are suppose to be using in refurbs. Although I haven't read if they are actually being used yet or not.
The end of the 3 year warranty is right around the corner (starting with launch consoles). And I will do repairs if a 360 is out of warranty and someone wants it.

No, no extra thermal paste you only need a thin smear so the heatsink doesn't burn out the GPU where contact is made, I wouldn,t recommend wiping it clean.
And this isn't just a clamp fix, this is what I did as there must be some log in the 360 like microsft windows has that tells it it has errored and won't boot until fixed by microsoft and they reset the 360 or clear the log, this is what I am telling people, also people are buying an x-clamp kit - y when you can just rebend the x-clamps that come with it, of course you can't just press wireless button then eject to get 2 lights then wireless and press off just to get it working as there would still be a problem inside for it to fail in the first place, I think that if people new what the wireless button and eject lights can do then maybe there other sequences that can fix other things???? but all I am saying is that when I fixed my GPU heatsink problem - I still got the ring of death intermittent until I pressed the buttons wireless etc etc..

Hold on your'e puttin them in the oven to melt the contacts for the gpu, obviously I wouldn't reccommend this FAN assisted ovens have higher temp settings lmao!
maybe you are melting the contacts but have you thought that high temperatures could cause other effects to your boards eg wiping a rom or something which is in someway causing your xbox to clear a log or bios etc which advertantly is doing what im doing with the buttons???

Have you stopped and wondered why everyone else who performs any type of rrod fix can do it without playing around with the buttons?
That's because it's not necessary.
You've repaired 2 rrods, 1 which has lasted 5 days so far. That puts you in with the other 98% of people who've fixed their 360.
As for the high heat... believe it or not, the components can withstand high temps.
Don't get me wrong... I happy for you that you fixed a rrod. But you're doing nothing which hasn't been done before and you've started a thread sounding like you've got the fix to end all fixes. I'm sorry but that just isn't the case.
Oh, by the way, you should have replaced the thermal paste. You should never reuse what's on there.

using old thermal paste is not good. you need to clean the gpu and cpu of the old paste, and reapply new paste; preferably AS5
since the heatsinks are off, you might as well lap them. that'll make them more flat.

hum...i never new that you could hold the wirless and eject button to reset your 360. As for fixing the rrod problem. Im with everyone here, in saying just wait a few weeks or maybe even days, then post the results. And as for the oven trick, i pressume that might work, seeing how the components are made to withstand high temps, but just make sure you keep in eye on it. God knows what could happen.

Hey guys I posted on this forum cos I like it, u don't need to be a I know everything about it, Yes it's a similar fix to all other rrod fixes of course it is. This post was intended for letting people know that when I pressed the corresponding buttons wireless and eject and get to the two lights then hold wireless and off - It resets something which causes the 360 to boot up - the heatsink fix is just my way of doing it - what I think might be happenin is when people do the towel trick "overheat the system" - this is resetting the xbox but not solving the problem as it always comes back rrod maybe a week later, I know about the solder under the gpu "Dry Joints etc" thats why I just bent the Clamps more to give more pull on the heatsink hopefully giving more contact to the joints, The 1st xbox was in a cupboard for months so I thought I'd give it a go at sortin the problem and this way I mentioned in the first post fixed for me, I am sharing my thoughts and it GUARANTEED MY XBOX TO BE FIXED AND STILL RUNNING! I didn't put Permanant fix maybe this will only last 1 month maybe 2, but so far I am playing on what would have been still stuck in a cupboard, when I fixed this I thought i'd give my mates a go, did the same fix..
I also switched it on after I did the fix, to see if the rrod was still there which it was!!!! so then I pressed the butons like I mentioned - switched it back on and it worked!!! so I knew by pressing the buttons in that order it reset something, this post wasn't really intentional to write about the fix I did but about the button sequence. maybe there is more sequences that do some really good stuff like remove cd key from dvd drive firmware LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh by the way I work with computers and I have never had any problems when using old thermal paste, I know you should put new on. I didn't put any back on as I didn't have any at the time this was just a quick fix, maybe the 360 will overheat again, then I'll put some on and do my button trick to see if it does work again just for a test lol if it doesn't then I don't really care like i said these are free xbox's that were sat in a cupboard (basically test units) but I am very confident that these xbox's will last for some time, I will post in the future and let you know the outcome if one does die.

well it defo worked for me, I know cos they both running but 1 needs a new drive.. fookin thing bad laser!! maybe your xbox has something else wrong with it??? I only tried this by the off chance it working when I put the heatsink and everything back, I switched 360 on and still got rrod, when I read on the forums and the web, the people that fixed there heat problem, say the 360 just works where as mine didn't. I messed with the buttons and the 360 came on I was amazed, and I thought it was coincidense. That's why I thought I's give it ago on another and it worked with the button trick on that.
well anyway people if you have heat prob, then it's worth a shot as I didn't pay for anything, so it don't harm to try it. and if it works for you then please let me know, nowt worse than a dead 360!

Maybe you should rename this thread. Because you are not guaranteeing anything. You just did it on your xbox and it worked somehow. In fact someone above the post said it didn't work.

How do I know Kamahl acctually tried it and not just saying he did just cos he thinks it might not work?? everybody has there way of fixing the overheating and dry joints problem, I had my way which I thought i'd share with everyone on the forum, plus he may have not pressed the buttons right?? my fix only took me 40 mins from stripping the xbox to fixing and putting back together, anyways I guarantee it worked on 2 xbox's if I had anymore I would defo guarantee I could get them up and running if they have the same problem, if I get another one to fix then I shall repost whith the outcome, and if it works then technically this post which states GUARANTEED to work, technically is true.

If lets say you are talking about this xbox and I say if you press and hold the sync button and then tap eject till you see 2 lights, let go, then hold again the sync button and tap the off button, I am saying that this is somehow clearing a log or bios or whatever, and obviously I have fixed my problem with the 360 (the clamp fix), but if you have other errors then I'm guessing it's telling your 360 that you still have an error and this won't work for you as the 360 must be putting something in a log or somert to this effect once you switch it back on.

Honestly, besides breaking the forum rules with your back-to-back posting, you should really just give this thread a rest.
It's good that you got your 360 running, but pushing the eject and sync buttons has nothing to do with "resetting" your 360. Those 2 buttons are used for showing the error code.
