I've got a first generation Wii, with a WiiKey installed since around April of last year. I am able to play the games I bought via Virtual Console, but neither retail or burned backup discs will read - always "a data error occurred" messages. The Wii's version 3.2, I *believe* the WiiKey was at 1.9, but it's been a long time since I had to work on this. I'm able to get to the settings page as well. I've tried using the discs from Wiikey's site, but the disks aren't read by the Wii.

Any ideas? I know the physical chip is connected properly - it had worked for 9+ months, and the engineer that did the soldering for me tested each connection with the multimeter (I believe that's what it was). This problem seemed to happen once in a while, but gradually increased. Now it's not possible to read *any* disc.

Also - worst case, if I removed this chip, would I be able to play my retail games again?

Thanks to anyone that can offer advice!

Sounds like the wiikey is dead. if you do take it off be careful and the wii should read originals.
