DVD Decrypter (~20 min) DVD2One (~20 min) Nero 6 (~15 hrs)
I don?t get why my burning speed is so slow. The DVD-R drive was cheap so I picked it up, but the burn speeds are not bearable. Burned CD-R?s at 40x without problems. The first DVD I burned using DVD Shrink and the burn process took 24hrs. I have up to date firmware (v.54) A few programs are open, nothing taking high resources though. DVD+R media is HP 2.4x which is crappy CTC media, but I still expect less than 1 hr burn times.
Any ideas?

I have almost the same hardware (not the same DVD burner, everything else the same).
The problem must be with your hard drive.
Open Nero and go File -> Properties
Click the Cache tab and click Test All Drives Speed.
You speed must be around 30.000-60.000 KB/s depending on your hard drive.
If they are not get the latest chipset drivers for you motherboard's chipset, from here:

If you install them you should have no problem.

wow, i have a few words to say.....DAM THAT IS SOME SLOW SPEED. Wut the hell, ur cpu seems to be fine if not great. In my opinion, must be the cheap burner u bought. Burn it in ur fire place and buy a pioneer AO6, just kiddign.

Also, win xp is taking almost all your 256mb ram. Get more ram, and it will definatly get better.

I ran the disk speed test through Nero and my drives are running between 36k and 44k. Drives are 2x 80GB Western Digital SE 8mb buffer, each drive is partioned in half. I will install the new drivers when the DVD is finished burning; 88% complete at the moment and 10hr 20min into the burn process.
I admit 256mb RAM is low, but another stick wouldn't make that drastic of a change.
After reading other reviews of users with this drive, nobody has had this problem. That is, unless I got a bad one.

yes, it would make a lot of difference. As i said, the minimum for running xp is 512mb.

Sorry to keep going back and forth on memory, but to clear up win xp pro's minimum memory requirements, 128mb is recommended but 64mb is required.

Not to be a jerk, but whatever you may have heard/read about XP's memory requirements is wrong. These guys here are trying to give you some very good advice! XP will absolutely eat up 256MB of RAM no matter what the box says. If you want to burn DVDs in less than a day it is in your best interest to add more RAM.
I'm running 1024MB of memory and at any given time XP will eat up well over 256MB on its own.

Ok well I'm just trying to eliminate factors that could be causing 24hr burn time. I can rip and encode files under 15 min each process so I persoanlly don't think it's my memory.
The DVD is almost done burning so I can finally start troubleshooting.
I'll post results.

updated firmware and chipset drivers.
currently burning 4.4gb of data to DVD and its on pace for ~22 min.
looks like the problem may be solved.

I run XP on a gateway 1000 bought in 2001 with P3 996mhz and 256 pc 100 ram. I have a TDK multi 440 dvd combo rom and burner. So far LOR has taken the longest time because I had to use Decrypter+Shrink, but usually if I have to use only shrink + nero 6 it takes less than an hour to about an hour from start to finish. Oh by the way my PC will run circles around my daughters new cheapazz dell dementia (misspelled on purpose think about it)desktop. My average burn time is 15-20 min using TDK 2.4 RW media

boys boys boys, i am running a pentium 3 733mhz with freakin 128megs of ram LOL and my burn time takes about 15-20minutes using Nero. I truly do not think it has anything to do with the memory guys.

I only have 256mgs ram. 1.8ghz p4. takes me only 15-20 min. to burn with sony drx-500ul external at 4X.

Problem wasn't the memory.
Problem was outdated chipset drivers. I just bought the mobo so I figured the disc had the latest drivers. Thank you #afonic for your suggestion and everyone else for the constructive critism.
ripping, encoding, and burning under 1 hour now. :thumbsup:
