First off, I'd like you to know, my main agenda for using custom firmware is JUST so I can play my old-school PS1 games on it, if there's another way to play PS1 games without updating firmware, I'd appreciate you sharing the knowledge =]

Now, if in fact I DO have to install CFW to play PS1 games on my PSP...
which DA firmware do you recommend?
Do I absolutely NEED an eXtra battery and mem stick to do install CFW? I only have 1 mem stick and 1 battery.
Is installing CFW as safe as installing sony's firmware?
What can I do to avoid getting my PSP bricked in the near future?

Help is appreciated. I also apologize if these are nooby questions...and please don't say "Go google it" because frankly, everyone has their own biased or OUT-DATED opinion on CFW's, thanks again.

B4 everything, what firmware do u have ?

1. If u want a big library of PSX games. Then get custom firmware. U must get an updated firmware. There is an emu, but it sucks.
2. For PSX games, upgrade to 3.90 M33. If you have a slim go for 3.95 GEN.
3. It depends on ur firmware.
4. Installing Custom Firmware should be the same as installing offical. As long , u dont turn off the psp while updating...
5. dont change flash files, or updating...

I didnt want to, but u made me say " Go google it". jk . If u have any more qs, reply back :)

You do need to install CFW to play your own PS1 games, the only ones you can play on Sony's firmwares are the games bought from the PS Store.

Unless you have a friend who has a PSP already running CFW, you will need an extra battery. It is possible to do it without, but this involves opening up your battery, cutting a pin on the circuit board and then re-soldering it afterwards, which is VERY tricky as the board is tiny.

Any of the M33 firmwares can be used for PS1 games, however some are better than others. I play a lot of PS1 games on my PSP, and have found 3.71 M33-4 to be the best. If you do experience compatibility problems, you can install an add-on called POPSLOADER.
However on 3.71 M33-4 i have played approx 25 different PS1 games, and never had to install the POPSLOADER program.

There is no more risk when installing CFW than there is running any of Sony's own FW updates, as long as you follow the steps EXACTLY. i recommend THIS guide to help you do it.

To help guard against future bricks, make sure you make a NAND backup before you install custom firmware. This way, you can restore your PSP to its current state if you have any major probs in the future.
Also, if you decide to edit your flash memory at any time (installing custom themes etc), make sure you backup your Flash0 files.

Hope that helps, post back with any more questions :)

Thanks for the replies, however...I read somewhere that with using just the battery and the A/C adapter(without hardmodding) you don't need a secondary battery? I heard that if you make a pandora battery, use it...install it all and then turn off the PSP when CFW install is done take the battery out then plug in your A/C cord to your PSP start up the the PSP with the A/C then put the battery in when done, and your battery turns back into a normal one.

Please remind me why I can't use 1 battery.
Info is appreciated!

that will only work with a cfw already installed if you have a friend that has cfw installed already you can use his help to turn your battery into a pandora temporarily
the only way ive seen to downgrade a 3.95 is a tool battery and a 512mb-4gb pro duo card
dealextreme has a tool batter for 10.50 USD & free shipping from hong kong
and if you search amazon.com you can find a 512 mb used for a mms pretty cheap thats what im doing now XD

you can use one battery, but if you only have official firmware, hardmodding is the only choice. flashing is only available to custom firmware psp's.

there are three choices:
- hardmod
- buy the datel TOOL battery
- find someone with a custom firmware psp and flash

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

Technically, can't I just hardmod my battery and KEEP IT LIKE THAT and when CFW install is finished, just use my A/C charger(without hardmodded battery in the PSP) and be able to run my PSP with just the A/C charger? I only play my PSP inside the house and in my car, so it wouldn't be THAT big of a deal to use the A/C all the time atleast until I get my second battery.

Yes, you can do that. Also, once it is switched on with the AC adaptor, you can put in your hard-modded battery and remove the AC adaptor and the PSP will run like normal. Hard-modding only effects how the PSP boots (ie it boots the PSP into service mode instead of the normal XMB), so once the PSP is booted up the hard-modded pandora can be used to power it.

I have also heard of a plugin that allows the PSP to boot normally with a pandora...i cant remember the name of it though, but if you search google for something like boot to XMB with Pandora you should find it. I would have a look for you but haven't got time atm.

Hope that helps.

This is the best post in the WHOLE topic, I thought I'd have to buy another battery, much appreciated! BTW, the XMB loader you were talking about is called booster.

Here's a quote from pspbrew.com on an article about BOOSTER
Quote:
It's important to note that you should not install this on a memory stick that you used during the creation of the "magic memory stick". Also, 32mb memory sticks are not compatible with this. Make sure to READ ALL DOCUMENTATION CAREFULLY before installing this tool. Since we don't have this in our downloads section yet, just pick it up at any neighboring PSP hacking website.
Does this mean I STILL need 2 memory sticks? It's quite obvious that's what is pointing to...but why can't I install it all on my ONE memory stick? Does the CFW install make it incompatible with this certain plugin somehow?

Sorry for all these questions, I just want to be safe before I screw this thing up.

To install CFW, you need to have a pandora battery and a Magic Memory Stick (MMS). We have already sorted your pandora questions, so now onto the MMS :).

The MMS must be created on a memory card between 512mb and 2gb to ensure it will work 100%. There have been reports that a MMS can be created on a 4gb card, but i have never tried it. Once you have created your MMS and installed CFW, you can format your memory stick and use it as normal.

However i would recommend that you buy a 2/4gb card for your games, and then an extra 512mb card for the MMS. This will then mean that you can keep the 512mb card as an MMS for future use, just incase you ever brick etc. Also, as 512mb cards can be picked up for less than £5 anyway it really makes sense to do it like that...
BUT as previously said, you do not have to do it like that, you can use the same card and just format it afterwards.

Hope that helps.

Haha, I'm sorry, but I've got another question, I've got a Memory Stick Pro Duo adapter so I can view my memory stick by plugging it in my media slot on my PC tower.....in-case I get a brick, couldn't I install the CFW by plugging it in my PC? Then I'd only need 1 memory stick, right?

Yep, you can do that no problems if that's how you want to do it.
Personally i prefer to have a ready made "unbricking kit" waiting for me incase i ever need it, but there is no reason you can't do it with the adaptor you have if you want too.

Happy to help :), hope it all goes ok for you.

Be careful with the hard-modding though... one tiny slip and you could mess the battery up for good!

Let us know how it goes.

I told you it was going to be lovely...lovevly as in the fireworks that came from my battery, the battery works fine ATM, I'm going to install the CFW and then use the A/C adapter until I can afford a new battery.

I'll report back after my escapades with the CFW install.

Edit: Okay, so about an hour after I opened up the case...I found a safety pin and put the pin under the leg to break it and make into a pandora battery - I put it in front of a fan to get rid of that death stink...going to try and use it in 10 minutes for the CFW install.

Glad it worked out for you! well done on not frying the battery aswell, it's a tricky task to hard mod them as the board is so small.

if you have any other problems give me a shout!
