So, I got it sorted!!!!!!!!!
I went to mates PC and used null modem cable only, downloaded GTrom 4 and put in 400 bin file. Port automatically went to COM 1. I had to flick on and off switch about 6 times before box started downloading. Took it home, hooked it up went to nagravision, stuck on ntl option and did automatic scan...
Lads/Girls, I m delighted .. i ve learned more about computers too!
Thanks Pip, malci, DesB for all ur help and patience. Dont know where I d be without forum
And also, lads i didnt like to see an argument developing based on my posts, ALL the advice helped so stay cool and keep up great work!

I know you and malci will realise that the "likewise" comment was made to bury everything and let's keep helping everyone.
@matti we are all "over the moon" you are now up and running. That's what we are here for.
Now that you have learnt a bit more about PC's and laptops would it not be the time to figure out how to configure your USB-Serial connector? That way you can do it yourself instead of relying on a mate with a desktop?
There are guides on here but if you need walking through it then pm me (click on the head on the top of my post). I'll guide you through step by step.
malci and DesB please don't take this as a snub to you cos it's not. I just want him to be able to do it himself in the future.
Pip

A lot of people have problems using vista and usb connectors to flash their boxes, xp seems to be a lot simpler.
Why doesn't someone make a step by step guide on how to do it?

I am hoping someone can help. I am trying to re-flash a stairview. As far as I can remember it is "the box" version but is there any way to confirm this ? It is a genuine it has 25 x 7 vents.
I downloaded the following files:
v4.03_051005.exe 15/11/2007
thebox_h20081222_457eE_api.bin 23/12/2008
and reflashed the box. I got the progress on the LCD on the box and after 100 I got the download sucessfull message.
When I now plug the box into the tv I get a screen saying "The Box", I can't access the menu and there is one dot green LCD light on the display....
isthe box knackered ? Any ideas ?
Thanks!
Just a quick one, when you say as far as you know it is The Box version, what does it say at the top left hand side of the box, if it says Starview then it is Starview 1, if it says The Box, then it is Starview 2 The box, that is how you can confirm it, but I suspect that you may have flashed a Starview 1 with the incorrect Firmware, (Hope I am Wrong).
Hi, I managed to reflash the box with the correct stairview 1 software. Took a couple of attempts and switching on and off but it then continued as it menchioned in the previous posts....I got the flash sucessfull message. When I then tried to connect it to the TV I got the usual menus working again but on an automatic scan I am getting 0 channels found. I tried using the GTRom_v4[1].exe to copy on the CryptStar-v1.5-core400.bin (30/11/2008 22:09) on to the box again and still 0 channels found.
I am NTL and when I do the autoscan on the screen it says (0/24) when searching for the channels....don't know if this makes a difference ?
Put EMU onto off and on when scanning but made sure it was on when going back the TV channels and still nothing. Have I totally messed up the box now...any ideas of anything else to try before I give up...although I don't really feel like giving up because I am finding it a challenge now :-)
Any ideas appreciated.....

As this is my first post I'd like to start by saying a big thanks to all the whizkids who have helped me so much with my box. I've used this forum over the last year or two and its been a great help - i've even been able to help mates out when their boxes go down. You'll probably notice i've only signed up today as i cannot find an answer to my problem.
I have a Starview2 'The Box' (belonging to a friend). I've downloaded the 'genuine' firmware and all seems fine. When i try to auto-install channels I have (0-24) similar to dboxhead above. However the autoinstall freezes after a few seconds.
I've reflashed the box 3 times now and it froze after 12% 16% and 20%. Maybe if I keep flashing i'll get to 100%!!
Any help and advise is greatly appreciated.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply. I was looking at http://www.freewebs.com/starview-update/ when i was updating it.
There appears to be 2 loaders from your link. Which one should i be using? And I don't see the latest firmware there? Is the firmware in this link the most up to date?
Thanks again

hi guys and girls,
if i update firmware on a clone starview, it goes through all the processes, i put the channel dump for dublin on, and the box only has about 5 channels working, extreme sports, travel and leisure, rte1, all the others say (from memory) bad channel or scrambled. i know that on "the box" it has a% amount and i just go through the channels one by one until it moves to 100% and hey presto. is it the same for the clone or do i have to go into the menu and play with the emu setting(if so i am waiting for a remote from flea bay).
any help appreciated.
Wheelo.

DesB - I extracted the files in your link and they seem to be the same as the ones I have already used ? Am I doing something wrong ?

Wheelo.
It is just the same for the clone, (No different in Flashing a clone SV than a genuine) - have you put the Core257.bin Firmware on (I presume so) - So if it will not update then you will have to wait until you get a remote because the Key Emu is apparently not turned on, and there is no way that you can access the Menu without a remote.

DBoxHead, Can you go to System Information and post what it says in there? as the Crypstar 1.5 is the current Firmware for Starview 1 okay.
