Hi
About six months ago i got a flashed and banned xbox 360 which the seller claimed was atleast a year old before the auction.
the console loaded games fine but the dvd tray kept getting stuck.
six months on and the dvd drive seems to have developed further problems ( such as the dirty disc error and the "open tray" for scratched legit discs.
I have done some reserach and have realised that i could just buy a brand new 360 drive and just tranfer the key form the existing drive.
unfortunately i cant do this as i own a laptop and no sata cables to boot.
my second option seemed to simply replace the laser. But that just seems to complicated.
my final option was a straight swap between the pcb of the existing dvd rom with a similar make.
Which is a were a third problem has come. I know that i have the samsung drive but unfortunately i am not sure if its m25 or m28 (tools to open my xbox have not yet arrived).

hence could some one please tell me if : a. i should be patient and find out which model number i have or
b.could i buy an m25 drive and still perform a direct pcb swap without having to spoof keys etc if i end up having an m28?
thanks for reading

i believe you still have to have the correct keys no matter what drive it is even if you are replacing it with the same one, each mb and dvd drive has its own unique key that has to match. opening the case is a since, i just use a eyeglasses flathead screwdriver and a t10 i believe it is, and you are good to go. no need for a kit, but you have already purchased it so oh well.

You can use the old board on the new drive, as long as it is the same model and version.

ms25 -> ms25
ms28 -> ms28

If you're going to open the console to find the version anyhow, take 10 minutes and remove the drive. Take the cover off and clean the laser eye with a q tip and rubbing alcohol. Just a damp q tip, don't over soak it. Then dig in a little further and toward the front of the drive you'll see the gears for opening/closing the tray. There's a black rubber band, which if it gets a little dusty, will slip causing the tray to stick. Take the rubber band off and clean it and the groves of the gears in which it sits with that alcohol and q tip.

It's worth the little time it takes.

You do need the drive key. If he takes the old board, which works fine and already has the key, and swaps it in to the new drive, then the new drive will work like the old drive.
