ok guys, its a long one but thanks for taking a look,--
my xbox 360 got the rrod. i bought screws (12 or 10 mm) and drilled the bigger holes in the xbox metal case. I ONLY USED METAL WASHERS. 2 on each side of the mother board. it worked for a few days at a time, and then it would start freezing and then rrod again. to solve this, i would do the last step of llama's rrod repair guide - you know, prop the fan up on the dvd player to heat up the gpu and not the cpu.
i figured that this was not good, cuz i felt like i was just reheatin the box again and again. so i went out and bought #10 nylon washers , m5 .8 x 10 machine head screws, and same 5 mm flat washers.
i redid my xbox repair by taking the screws outta the metal casing, and putting them like so-
screw - metal washer - nylon washer - motherboard - nylon washer - metal washer - heatsink...this time i again cleaned both of the chips to mirror finish and reapplied artic compound (didnt use to much, looks just like in any guide)
now, when the nylon washers were in, it would turn on, rrod for a second, and then the 2 red lights saying overheating happen,, and the fans shut off , nothing happens, the xbox just sits there blinking the 2 red lights.
i tried to redo it with the nylon washers and with the screws starting outside of the metal case, but, this too, would leave me with rrod for a split second and then back to the 2 red lights for over heating.
lol i never actually thought id be looking for the rrod...anyways.
well, i wanted to play some xbox tonite, so i redid it like so -
i took the screws outta the case, and now it goes, screw - 3 metal washers - motherboard - 2 metal washers - heatsink blah blah....
i turned it on, no rrod, no 2 lights, just straight to game. its been running for almost an hour now.
im worried that its gonna gimme rrod sooner or later, and i do not want that for obvious reasons. any ideas on why it does not wanna work with nylon washers?
o and incase anybody is stupid like me DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY TO 3redlightfix.com --> its complete rip off!!! first off, one of the guides you can find on torrents, and quick frankly, it didnt work and they havent refunded me my money so eff em.
one last quickish question - if my xbox doesnt go back to rrod'ing, is there any ideas on how to get my motherboard to lay flat in the metal casing? as it is now i have to kinda fight and wiggle to get the rf module and power cord/ ac adapter and memory cards all in...motherboard isnt lined up correctly with the metal case (hope you see what i mean)

well... first of all the nylon washers have nothing to do wiht your xbox having the red lights, that is not smart at all to do what you did. it needs to have nylon only touching the mb. the xbox dosnt use an earth ground like the pc so you are lucky you havnt fried it yet. it sounds like to me you are doing what you think is best for your xbox, following steps out of line and things of that nature. if you are serious about fixing it you need to follow it by the book, make sure everything is perfect before you wont even be able to turn it on. after that if you are still getting lights its it is the 3 ur screwed if it is something else do a code check on it, and find out exactly what it is.

yeah it sounds like this fist time you repaired it, you just bought random ass screws and placed them half ass. That hurt your xbox even more. SInce you already have the right hardware click: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/671180 and follow that guide step by step. That should get a permanent fix, provided you didn't damamge your GPU/CPU already.
Also are you sure you bought the right washers? If you are saying Nylon washers don't work that only means, when you use them, the cpu is hitting those washers first and not the heatsink. It needs to be in perfect balance of hitting the cpu first but also have washers there as support so you dont' bend the mobo when you tighten, but don't go the other way because heatsink MUSt be touching CPU first.

last nite i sat down with all recommended parts and did it step by step, ill post the guide later that i followed cuz im not at my laptop right now, and all i got was the TWO lights signalling over heating. as soon as the nylon are taken out, it worked (and i didnt even have to heat up the box or anything). do you guys use the method where you put the screws through the metal case also? or just the motherboard?

just the mobo try using nylon and no metal if it works stick with that, souns like what burning as said your heatsink isnt making proper contact.

I have to ask seeing how you didn't mention. Did you check the error code first? The 360 will display the 3 red rings for multiple hardware issues, not just overheating.
An x clamp fix won't fix everything.

Once you fix it isn't there a way to reset the lights with the controler. I remember reading that some where.
