My friend brought a backup copy of his mario kart wii so we can play it. When I popped it in that top left hand corner where you would see like a little movie of the game it displays "system update" What is that all about?

It means the disc has a firmware update on compared to your Wii.

Being Mario Kart it probably has 3.2 on it. If the backup is the same region as your Wii there should be no issue. If it's a different region then expect a bricking (either full or semi)

Ok well I have a NTSC wii but the dvd player is PAL with the wiikey will that make a difference? I think my system will be NTSC since the wii is what makes the region not the dvd player correct?

Also I have the latest update on my wii which is 3.2. So why is mario kart telling me to update the firmware when it is the latest version.

The wiikey is 9s also

When you say DVD Player - you mean the Mario Kart disc?

If the disc is not the same region as the Wii then there's every chance it will see 3.2U and want to 'update' it to 3.2E... why not save yourself aggro and use the same region backup?

All DVD Drives are interchangeable between regions. it does not make a difference. Go by the Wii firmware that is installed on the Wii itself.

So you have a PAL MarioKart disc in an NTSC Wii... save yourself aggro and get a MarioKart disc that's the same as your Wii (so either NTSC-U or NTSC-J depending on which NTSC your Wii is)
